5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
well, i have 30K on the car, i bought it used at 22K and im not sure if they were ever changed(doubt it).. im not totally sure whats normal wear for brake pads.. i get some rumbling at higher speeds when i brake, could that be warrantied? just because i got new tires put on today and my mechanic said im gonna need new brake pads in a few thousand miles.. so im tryin to save as much money as possible if i can get things warrantied..
Odds are, your brake pads will not be covered under warranty. Because you are the second owner, you really have no idea how the other driver drove. (Maybe they were really hard on the brakes). Plus, with 30,000 miles on the car, it is entirely likely it is due to normal wear and tear. (Maybe the previous owner drove in rush hour traffic each day).
The only case that I can see is if the pads are not wearing evenly. For example, only one of the pads is worn, while the other three are still fine. There may be other examples, but that's the only one that I can think of.
Rumbling can occur when braking yes. Unless something is grossly wrong, the dealer will state it is normal wear and tear.
Toyota pads work great for normal driving, much less prone to squeal and cost about the same as aftermarket. As TRD states make sure you transfer the shims, squeal issues again. Toyota rotors are also great but are much more expensive then Brembo to the point where an aftermarket choice is the way to go for most people on a budget.
You can also have the current rotors turned down on the car if enough material is left. But the cost is around the same as buying 2 new rotors and in my opinion going this route is not as good as installing new rotors.
as someone said above the only way the brakes would be covered under warranty is if there was an actual factory defect in the rotors or pads. That's one of those many things that fall under the "wear items" on your vehicle. Which means that things that are subject to wear because of driving conditions or the driver's habits, are not covered. This is why people flip out when they can't drive for shizzle and they go to the dealer for brakes and they find out its 400$ cuz they can't brake the proper way.
