errr??

Technically, your 5th and 6th gears are your "overdrive" gears.

By definition, your over drive gears are the top most gears used for cruising speed to save on gas. If you want to "turn it off"...shift to "S" mode and shift to a lower gear.

Yes, I agree that the 5th and 6th gears are "overdrive" gears.
(Overdrive in theory being the RPM coming out of a transmission is greater than the RPM coming in, hence the term "overdrive")

Ahhh... got it now. I was so used to that O/D button on my 2001 Celica GT.

"S" mode is kind of weird if you are used to Tiptronic or other cars with a manual shift capability. Its the Toyota way don't you know..

"We know what is best for you and will allow you to shift if you are within our pre-programmed parameters"

Page 165 of the owners manual explains how it works.

Quote:

You can change the shift range position in the “S” mode. The shift range position

can be switched between “6” (sixth range) and “1” (first range) by moving the selector lever up to the “+” side or down to the “–” side.

When the selector lever is shifted to the “S” position, the initial shift range position is “4” (fourth range) or “5” (fifth range) depending on the vehicle speed.

However, if the selector lever is shifted to the “S” position when AI shifting control is being performed, the initial shift range position may be “3” (third range). This is because the suitable shift range is selected depending on the driving condition.
