Hello guys, I am shopping around for a 4 Cylinder Camry XLE with leather interior. The prices I've been able to talk it down to ranges to the high 24,000's . The best price being 24,450 with the freight charge waived. The problem with that is that they do not have it in their lot yet. I have a few questions about this.
1) Is this a good price??
2) What problems might present since they dont have the car in their lot yet?
2b) Could they sell it to me and have me waiting a long time to get it?
Well when i bought my car, it wasn't in the lot. They had to order mines since i wanted a specific color. For me, it took about a week for the car to come in.

That is a lousy price if the only option is leather. Manufacturer invoice is $23,621!!!!!!!
Im sorry, im confused. I know that there are other options, but say the invoice price on the car is 23,621: How much above invoice price should I go?. I asked to see the invoice price when I first went to the dealer, and it was about 23,800 with the options.
By the way I am paying for the entire vehicle at once, cash (check from my bank actually). Can this give me more leaverage in negotiating?

Did you see the MSRP, invoice price and Your price on the Fitzmall links??? Your price is about $400 under dealer invoice. Does that give you a clue?
You can go $5,000 over invoice if you want. I wouldn't pay more than $400 under dealer invoice at this time. You can buy stripper CE's and LE's for less than that at weekly dealer sales.
You went to the dealer with no idea of what you wanted in options or wanted to pay apparently. Try to get the cart behind the horse now.
I always pay cash also. I paid $300 over invoice the first month the '07's came out.
You hold the cards, you only give them away through ignorance or if you elect to.
Paying cash gives you ZERO leverage. It means the dealer will not make anything through financing the car. Thus, you will have to pay for something and that will be the car itself.

Cash USED to be King. It's not anymore.
I'm buying the car, not subsidizing the dealer. There are plenty of clowns around to help him with that task.
Go to kbb.com and build your car. Their wholesale prices are very accurate. They fail to add in the advertising charges the dealers must pay and that's in the ballpark of 550, depending upon the region. Anyway, build your car exactly the way you want it, with none of the options you don't want, write it all down and then go in knowing what sticker price is, invoice price is, and work down from there. Plan on having the dealer order the car and plan on it taking a few weeks to get to you. Unless you are walking right now, you can wait a few weeks for them to build the car to your specs. Beware of anything they might want to sell you at closing like extended warranties and LoJack. If you want them, fine, but get good prices before you get the car.

$400 under invoice? wow, do they buy in bulk and make profit by in that manner? Cuz it doesnt sound logical to sell for that price. You write in a very "matter of fact" tone, that is throwing me off a little (dont know if your sarcastic or not sometimes), but thanks for your advice.

I had a rough idea of the options, but you have convinced me to do more research and I did. So $300 over invoice is not a good deal anymore? Should i go for $400 like you stated above? gdanher, I went to kbb.com and edmunds.com and got the invoice price for the car I am going to buy with all the options I want. I confirmed these options with a saleswoman I spoke to over the phone. The jist of the deal I currently have with her is:
-2007 4 Cyl. XLE with
-leather package
-heated seats
- Z1 premium package
- vehicle stability control
-lifetime limited warranty (says only her dealer offers it, but im a skeptic so ill ask around tomorrow)
Price she offered me 24,300 with the Freight charges waived
Now the invoice price at edmunds and kbb.com with these options is $24,818
am I where I want to be? or should I shop around for a better deal? (car buying is tough)
TRD WTi, yea i was just reading somewhere that it might actually work against you to tell them your paying cash, for the reasons you stated.
Thanks all!! hope to be around the board for years to come.

The first Fitzmall link I gave you was that exact car at $24,700. A total of $24,300 sounds good but I would do this.
You want no surprises..........
Get the Color/interior/options/availability listed in writing with the price quoted by fax or email.
Also get an estimated itemized total of doc fee, tax and license fees for an out the door price.
Be sure everything is in writing. I have always dealt with a Sales Manager so there is no chance of a Salesman giving you a load of crap w/o the Managers Authorization.
Once you have that, you can go in and p/u the car and say NO to the barrage of dealer supplied BS that they want to add on (warranties/coatings/pinstripes/Lo Jack/etching etc.) to add to their profit margins.
If you want an extended warranty, you can buy later on the internet for less than $900.
Have Fun. You have the $$$$ and they want it. You are in charge..........
I would add that some dealers want a deposit for an ordered car. Given the model and the equipment, I would decline to give them a deposit. There is nothing unusual about the car and they can sell it to 10 people in a week. Agree and list the options and give the salesman a copy of exactly what you want. Don't bother haveing him sign anything. It's really useless becasue if they don't get the car you want, you aren't going to buy it anyway. Beware of bait and switch stuff such as finding a similar car at another dealer in the region which isn't precisely what you wanted. What a few weeks and be in no hurry at all. My last Camry was ordered and I told them I didn't want it before a CD was due in 6 weeks. They got it in 4 weeks and let it sit on the back lot for the next 2 until I brought them the check. No rush and you get what you wanted.

"People who think they know it all are particularly irritating to those of us who do."
ok talked to the salesman to clear up everything once again.
He now says the freight charge was waived for the $24700 he gave me earlier only. I told him that was a clever way to raise the price on me since 24300 + 650 is $24,950. He told me the 24700 price w/o freight was the best he could do.
how does that compare to the fitzmall price?
After he did all of this, I told him to give me a breakdown of the out the door price including all fees, taxes and tags.
he told me $25,934 "give or take a few pennies".
I told him I wanted the price through email and he said he couldnt do it because of some speil about the computer.
I called another dealer and they said they would beat the price by $100, but i would need to take a car from their lot. He said they were taking a loss. I told him I'de rather pay $100 more for the color I want.
So this is where I am. Im planning on calling 2 other dealers to see if tey will beat the price or at least match it, and to see if any of them have the balck car I want.
gdanaher, I will follow your advice and not put down a deposit. I will update as this goes on.
