Either way, you can't take HIDs out of a car that has them OEM because the base won't fit... the Camry uses a 9006 base. OEM HIDs use a D1S, D1R, D2S, D2R, or D4S base.
As far as putting HID projectors in (and the aftermarket projectors you have are not HID projectors), yes, a lot of work is required. Only with an HID projector (or reflector) which accepts the D1, D2, or D4 bases can you literally take HIDs out of a car that came stock with them and use them.

Glaring blue HID bulbs are NOT classy, and don't make your car look nice, no matter what that kid in the Civic told you.

^This is where the term "HID retrofit" comes from.
