can you put the light switch onto "auto" with hids?

does anyone put the light switch onto "auto" with their hids? i'm just wondering if its better to keep all lights off and just switch to "on" that way the hids wont have any chance of turning off and on quickly... thanks!

Auto still works the same way now that I have HIDs. I leave it in Auto all the time.

Remember, the auto feature just uses the light sensor to self-induce the on and off conditions of the headlights. Nothing more. So what kind of bulbs or what wattage they are has nothing to do with this feature failing to work.

On some vehicles, you might get a false light-burnt error with HIDs because once they're on, they use just 35W (versus 55W of halogens), but the Camry in particular, does not get fooled.

as for the auto setting, its personal preference. personally, i don't think its a good idea to have the hid's turn on and off when you go into a tunnel or patch of shade or something. it may prematurely wear out your ballasts, but thats my opinion. there are cars with OEM hids that flash them for the alarm... so who knows, its probably fine if the manufacturers do it that way.

i just don't see the point of using auto myself: 1) DRL's come on [i don't like them] 2) sensitivity is too low [on rainy/dark/foggy days, auto does not turn on the headlights] 3)I rarely ever ever forget to turn off the headlights. plus our cars have a nifty feature: press lock twice, and the headlights go off... i just get into the habit of pressing lock twice whenever i'm locking the car.

I don't like using AUTO either because everytime I pulled into my garage the damn HID turned on!!!!!!
In regards to headlight go off....in my car, I had the dealer set my headlight to turn off instantly as I open the door.
I'm sure you can get your car to do the same regardless of Gen5 or 6.
