Has anyone got an aftermarket alarm with there smartkey? I have an XLE w/ the smartkey and I have very expensive shit in and on my car and need ideas on security...factory systems arent safe enough for me. I went to my local audio shops and some said I would need to bypass my smartkey and only be able to start my car with the viper remote, but I dont think thats a good idea. And others said its risky and honesty told me to wait for something to come out that will work for my car. And does anyone know if the glass break sensor for the smartkey system worth it, because thats my last resort? Any input is appreciated please...THANKS!!!

The smarkey alarms seems to have lots of gottchas.
I have a regular LE Camry but read thru the manual with the Smartkey GBS installation.
Lots of gottchas.. Don't let a non-professional do anything on it til they understand it.
I have an XLE w/ SmartKey, I got the Automate AM1 installed in my car by the dealer.
This system use your existing SmartKey remote, so far I have no problems with it.
Someone asked this question a month or so ago... and I replied, saying that the Smart Key is a very advanced electronic component that only trained professionals should mess with... and most people who install alarms at retail locations (Ahem... Best Buy, Circuit City, and so on...) aren't necessarily trained to work on cars that have such electronic components. The Smart Key System is very expensive to fix if someone messes with it and screws it up, and if it breaks, most likly only a Toyota dealer would be able to fix it... and since it wasn't a defect, it won't be covered under warranty. Why risk messing with it? (No one really pays attention to alarms anyway).
But since the last time I made those comments, some guy nagged that I didn't know what I was talking about.... So I shall say nothing except:
-It may be better just to leave the system alone, and just make sure that all expensive components are in the trunk or out of sight.... that way no one will know there's anything of value in the car. (Except the rims... wheel locks?)
-Get the VIP factory alarm installed at the dealer... there have been some threads either here or at hybridforum.com that say that the Toyota factory alarm just has to be activated, and there are no additional components to buy or install. (I'm not sure if this is true, you'll have to do research to find out)
-If you do get an aftermarket alarm system installed, make sure that the installer offers a warranty for parts and labor- and has some kind of protection if they screw something up during the install.
Best of luck, and I hope you figure something out.
All i have is Lojack as well but i never stress about my car outside since i live in a apartment complex and there're always security officers driving by all night, i've been living here for about 2 1/2 years and no problems so far
