Avalon to get 6 speed transmission in 08.. from Edmunds
hey guys...
i just read on edmunds, i don't know whether it is true, maybe someone can verify that the new avalon will get the 6 speed transmission. with the problems i am hearing, i can't believe they are doing this... what is TOYOTA THINKING???
In terms of mileage, I'm pretty sure the difference is negligble between a 5speed and 6speed with overdrive.
In terms of speed... you're not going to need that much of a difference driving an Avalon... and for some reason I prefer the shorter meatier gears of a 5 speed, just seems more suitable for city driving (which is where I drive most). It's not like you're going to be racing around. Also, I hate the way auto trannies downshift.
I guess I just find the 6th gear a little unecessary and more of a ploy to draw in buyers. Especially considering it has had past mechanical issues I'd think twice before putting it in another car. Besides, I've heard a couple of bad things here and there about other Toyota 6 speed trannies.
I'm not an expert or anything, it's just my opinion.
It's true that the 6 speed trannies have had issues, but once they are fixed I think it would be a great idea to be put into the Avalon. I can be cruising down the higher at 70-80mph and not go above 2K RPM's, which would help out with some road noise i'd imagine.
You gotta be joking. There is no way that Toyota would put a 6M in the Avalon. If anything, the IS350 or GS350 would get it before any other 2GR equipped vehicle.
The Avalon is more luxury touring oriented than performance or economy which would be the target market for a manual transmission. A Camry SE V6 6M would be a much better move than a Avalon 6M.
there is no way Toyota will ever put a manual tranny in any late model Avalon!

yeah, it is probably true. the toyota powertrain mfg facility in west virginia that i work at is currently putting the finishing touches on a new 6spd sequential shifting automatic transmission plant for the 3.5L V6 currently in production. We currently produce the 5spd automatic that is used in the sienna, avalon, solara others. the 6spd will basicly be a replacement for the 5spd, so it would make sense that the 6spd will go into the avalon. we begin production very soon, but it will be VERY limited volume at first to ensure a quality product. We don't know what will happen to the current 5 spd plant......rumors are retooling it for a corolla 5spd auto, or scrapping it altogether and putting in another 6spd tranny plant suitable for the 2.4L 4 cylinder........who knows........

so they have a completely new 6-speed transmission in the camry now as well or is it the same 6-speed that has been flaring??

I belive it is the same transmission that is in the camry. I am sure that toyota has "Kaizen-ed" the plant, process as they learned lessons from the original. I do not know much about the flaring issue, other than what I have read on this forum. This transmission will probably eventually be in any toyota that has the 3.5L V6, which would be camry, avalon, sienna, solara, rav-4, highlander, rx3530, es350, etc.
