5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I bought an 07 SE a little over a week ago. It's a pretty basic SE. Didn't even have a moonroof. The car only had 4 miles on it when we test drove it and fell in love. The only extra we really wanted that it didn't have was the moonroof.
The salesman at the dealer told us that he could have one put in by a Toyota certified shop and it would look like it came from the factory. I am REALLY sketchy when it comes to aftermarket moonroofs. I was a little hesitant, but went ahead with it since the guy told me that the place was certified by Toyota .
I am supposed to drop the car off this afternoon and have been thinking about it all day. What if this damn thing starts leaking??? It will be covered under the warranty and we asked several times and the saleman ASSURED us that he has had it done before with no problems.
Have any of you had this done and if so have you had problems??? Should I go ahead with it or try to get some other extras on the car that aren't so invasive?
I would not get a moonroof put in. If it doesn't leak (which it most likely will), it'll rattle.
I have to agree. It's like asking for trouble, especially if you plan to keep this car long term. What the salesman is not telling you is that Toyota will not warranty the aftermarket install; the aftermarket shop that puts it in will have to warranty it. Will they even be around in a couple of years when it starts to leak? In addition, what is "A Toyota Cetified Shop?" I have never heard of this. I doubt Toyota corporate has the time or the desire to go around certifying aftermarket shops.
My advice would be to stay away from an aftermarket moonroof.
NO! There is no such thing as a moonroof that is not factory but just like factory. If it is too good to be true, it is. If you want a moonroof, buy a car with a moonroof. If you want this car to have a factory moonroof, it can be done. It will be necessary to cut off the roof skin, replace the headline, do some serious rewiring, etc. $4000 later, you've got your moonroof. If you have already bought this car, drive the hell out of it or trade it back in today, take the loss and order what you want. Shame on you for thinking this might work. The salesman also has some buried gold and a treasure map, along with some nice property in southern Louisiana.

Jesus flipping Christ! Some of you people are assholes! Just my honest opinion. I was asking for advice and to see if anybody had ever heard of or done anything like that.
Now...
I called Toyota Corporate to see what they had to say and yes the dealership does have a "certified" place they can take cars to have aftermarket items installed, but they warned against the moonroof, unless we could get something in writing from the dealership so that the warranty wouldn't be voided if there were any problems. They said then it would be fine, but their "politically correct" answer is to not do it. So I called the dealership and they are going to issue me a check for the full price plus taxes.
Thank you to the people who answered and weren't asses about it. I do appreciate it.
Those you describe as asses may have some experience that certainly you don't possess. If our extreme negative responses were offense to you, well, tough. We saved you from an insanely stupid decision. Next time, don't 'fall in love' with a car you just have to have, except for this and that......hasty decisions come back to bite your......asses.
