Has anybody experimented with switch their overhead console that doesn't have homelink and put in a overhead console with homelink on a gen 5 ? If anyone has any experience with this, please enlighten me before i tackle this project.

i have looked into it, and i can tell you its probably just a simple matter of switching the consoles and plugging the new one in. i took the overhead console out to tap its power for my homelink mirror, so i got a look at how the wiring is situated. if you choose to do it this way, its a very expensive option. a homelink overhead console is $468 new from the dealer... cheapest i have found new is $324. in my opinion, its far cheaper ($200) and a better bang for your buck to get a homelink mirror... you get the added benefit of having auto-dimming and a compass if you don't have it already.

i was able to purchase one off ebay for $100. so right now, i'm just looking at how to hook up the homelink. plus i have the auto dimming mirror from the factory.
i don't remeber how exactly, but i know i had to pry a little hard. check the camry faq in the camry general discussion... the manuals are stickied at the top. i think there are two clips that you have to disengage from the front (facing the drivers seat), and the rear (facing the windshield) just slides out. don''t take my word for it though, check the manual...

^Did you read the rest of the thread? If everything works out, it is just plug and play. He doesn't have to run any wires. Just remove the old overhead console and put the other one with homelink in.

Always got something else in mind...
i already had the switch and the wire, the car already had the cut out for the switch, cost: $0.00.
this way the remote is out of sight.
i could have left the circuit card inside the original case but i decided to take it out to possibly increase the range a bit more.
yea, you can buy homelink for about $100.00 from ebay ( high risk purchase), then you can mess with removing consoles etc, increasing the possibility of rattles.
God only knows we dont need any more rattles in the camrys.
^I'm confused. How is it a high risk purchase if you buy from a reputable seller and why would someone pick a overhead console to sell as a scam?
If you remove the overhead console, it snaps back into place. Very easy. Believe me, I know because I installed an autodimming mirror and I had to remove it for that. If you replace it with another console, it should snap back into place just the same. No rattles whatsoever unless you do something horribly wrong.
IMO, you actually get a higher possibility of a rattle by removing a lot of interior pieces to run wire.

Why not just put the remote in the coin tray and use it from there?
I put mine in the sunglasses thing up where that console is. Works great! Only reason why i don't program the HomeLink is because my garage door openers are so old that it doesn't work. I've tried a few times.
i did the switch.... easy job! less than five mins and i replaced my old console with a used one that had homelink. it is as simple as just unpluggin the old one and pluggin in the new one. plus, i bought this console over at ebay ($100)... not bad at all!
