Check engine light

Hello, My check engine light came on and the dealer said I need a catalytic converter for $625. My 2005 V6 Camry has 87,000 miles and I'm kind of in shock. Does anyone know if this really needs to be done or will it be alright if I do nothing? Thanks

To fix your car you will need to replace the convertor. It's not working efficiently and will probably end up restricting the exhaust flow and eventually plugging.

$625 isn't really that bad. I doubt you've had to pay for much else as far as repairs go.

Viking: You can change the catalytic converter for a generic one from the internet for a whole lot less than $625! I changed the one on my truck for the aforementioned generic kind, it cost me $65 and the flanges even fit - it just needed to be cut to size (10 minutes work with a hacksaw). Unbolted old one, bolt up new one, done. This truck has 300,000 miles on it and passes (very tough) California smog inspection easily -

Cheap ass convertors usually don't function very well on OBD II vehicles.

Some even say that they're not for use in California. That's because they don't work worth a shit.

Check your owner's manual for the warranty for your converter. If it's out of warranty at 80,000 miles I would give Toyota customer service a call at 1-800-331-4331 and ask for some good faith help in extending the warranty for the converter. You are not that much past 80,000 miles. Might be worth a call.

Good luck.
