Yep. Happened to a new 1985 VW Jetta. Took it to the dealer and he made an appointment for the regional manager to take a look. He literally got the magnifying glass out, looking for a rock chip and when he couldn't find one, he had to warranty the new glass but he didn't want to. It happened when I was going down a lonely rough road. Right in the corner of the windshield. Car must have flexed a bit and the glass was glued in too well.

99% of the time there is a rock chip that you don't notice. When there is a temperature change or movement in the glass (driving) it becomes large enough to notice.

If you look along the crack I'm sure that you will find a small chip.

something like that hapenned to me too. woke up one morning and had a crack stemming and running from the driver side edge of the windshield. i figureed a small pebble must have hit the glass when i was driving, so small that i never felt it, but overnite, it grew. that is why i need to buy some form of edgeguard film for the front glass. those little pebble hits cause windshield replacements.
