5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
is the '07 Camry on the top-10 most-stolen vehicles list in the US? (or will it be?)
my next-next-door neighbor saw my new Camry and borrowed it for an afternoon.
she's thinking about buying one for her daughter who's starting college in a couple
of months. The other vehicle they're considering is the Honda Accord, which I told
her not to get, because a re-designed According is coming out real soon...
Anyway... she wanted to know this: is the '07 Camry on the top-10 most-stolen
vehicles list in the US? (or will it be?) I had no answer for her.... Only the 2007
Camry... not the previous model years...
P.S. my Toyota dealer told me "the Camry is the number one most stolen vehicle in America...." but of course that was during his 10-minute sales pitch trying to get me
to pay $1400 for LoJack and $899 for Toyota VIP security system...... )

^Yeah they always say that... they never specify that it is the Gen 2 Camry, for the most part, that is one of the most stolen. Few other model years even make the list. Its highly unlikely that the Gen 6 will as well.

Glaring blue HID bulbs are NOT classy, and don't make your car look nice, no matter what that kid in the Civic told you.

I also own an undisclosed Lexus SUV. Apparently its HID headlight assemblies were stolen
on a regular basis. Lexus sent me a recall notice. The dealer installed some anti-theft
bolts and a half-inch steel cable that tied the lamp assembly to the frames. In addition,
they also applied something call the "DataDots" which are tiny paint dots that have my
vehicle VIN or some other serial number on it....
I think it's worth getting the Lojack EWS. My dealership hooked me up with an awesome deal. Inquire about it with your dealership and insist that they install it for close to free of charge.

Here's my educated guess. Generally cars are stolen for their parts, not just to be resold. As cars age their individual parts become more valuable to thieves. Since the Camry is one of the highest selling cars, there will eventually be a high market for Camry parts, so it is likely to become one of the frequently stolen cars, but not just yet. The original 07 models will need to have been paid for and their warranties expired from old age before they become a target of theft. Give it 5 years or more. Usually the frequently stolen cars are at least 10 years old. Early 90's Hondas and Toyotas are hot theft items.

something just occured to me.... if more than 1,000,000 (ONE MILLION) cars/trucks
are stolen in the US every year, what's the total population of car thieves? does this
mean there are hundreds of thousands of Americans who are car thieves? On top
of that, there are thieves who steal from homes, offices, etc..... and you never
know what they look like. for example, I saw the local cop arrest a "professional"
car thief on the new the other day. this guy always wears an expensive 3-piece
suit when he steals cars. A very clever disguise. Nobody would even remotely
think that he's roaming the parking lot stealing cars!

Yes, there are hundreds of thousands of thieves out there. Few are ever caught or if they are, little or nothing happens to them. Property crimes are low priority in most jurisdictions. Have to save the jail space for the actual murderers, and since most states don't want to execute the MFers, the prisons fill up with some really bad dudes. Fortunately here in Texas we still use the death penalty, sometimes on a weekly basis, which keeps the number of incarcerated murders down and makes other guys think about it.

'Undisclosed'...what's up with that? Real hard to know it's the RX330 that has the HID issue.

It's the older Camry's that are stolen more often because they had no security other then needing a key. And speaking of keys, i've heard that you can use any Toyota key with the older Camry's because the keys are stripped.
The Gen6 has a system immobilizer, so unless you have the original key it wont start.

Kinda true. The key for my gen 3 camry kept getting worn down, and after a while it wouldn't open the doors anymore, but I could still start the car with it. I went through about a key every 6 months for the past 2 years just to make unlocking the doors smooth and easy. One of my friends tried to hotwire his camry with an immobilizer and it didn't work. He also tried to push start(manual trans) it too, but that also didn't work unless the key was in.
yeah... it seems like to be one of the popular career choices. They should be allowed to
for unions, get medical/retirement benefits, or even form a lobbying organization....
Wait a second... I just realized that's what prisons are for!
On the other hand...
My sister-in-law's late father used to say that he was able to afford a happy retirement in
Florida, thanks to the criminals. Without criminals to catch, he'd be out of a job a long time ago.
Obviously he was in law enforcement. Many of those criminals were also "repeat customers!"
