5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
1. Cruise control - light comes on but cruise will not engage.
2. Shift indicator - no lights, but no problems with shifter going in gear
3. Auto door lock at speed - just stopped. Locks work, but don't do the thing when you get up to a certain speed.
4. Rear defroster... the light comes on, but the coils don't do anything.
5. Back up lights... do not come on when car is put into reverse.
Are these all on the same circuit? Just curious if it's something stupid I've overlooked.
I've checked all the fuses and they appear fine. I have not yet checked for continuity. I really would hate to spend the diagnostic fee if it's something simple.

Thanx.
Recheck the 10A Gage 2 fuse, it is the common source with Item 1, 2 (may be the others). Also Ign 1 relay is ahead of the fuse. (Check fuse for 12v on the top.) Good luck!!!!

What I don't understand is why things like the cruise and rear defroster lights come on but the function they provide doesn't work... weird...
I'm quite the idiot, so are the fuses actually labeled Gage 2 or Ign 1? And these are in the engine compartment or to the left of the steering below the steering wheel? Thanx.
1.-cruise control is controlled by the ecu. if the light comes on i would say the ecu is bad or one of the relays controlled by the ecu is bad. bad tps, bad throtle control motor. pg 190 of the online manual.
2.-if none of your lights work I would say your combination meter is bad. or a lose connector. pg 218/266/212 of the online manual.
3.-locks controlled by ecu. pg 154
4.-bad def relay. pg 246 of the online manual. not related to ecu at all.
5.-back up light very simple switch, probably located around the shifter pg 142. not related to ecu at all.
sounds to me like your ECU is having problems. get ready for big bucks.

Sorry to be dense... but do you have a link to the online manual? Thanx.

Activate command for the relay and light is from another source. The real power is through the contacts on the relay and is fused seperately. The correct fuse to check is "GAGE 2", located inside the dash.
NOTE: There is a relay in front of that fuse. On top of each fuse is a place to test for power on each pin. Find a good ground for the tester and probe the "test pads" of the fuse, while installed, IGN should be in the run position in this case. Good = power on both spots.
Good luck

wow this is quite unusual in a car this new....i have an 03 SE I4 and i only have 50k and have had no issues at all
make sure you check all your relays and fuses first, as they are usually the root of your issues...
the fact that all this is happening on a few unrelated circiuts leads me to assume its an ECU issue.....if it was just one thing like the back up lights or cruise i'd say you have a short to ground or something simple....but this points to a larger issue
i can look the issue up on TIS techstream at school on thursday and see if theres any reposted cases of similar occurances and solutions

This could explain the age... I drive almost 100 miles round trip every day to work. The car is a 2005 SE... I currently have over 83K on it now.

Well, last night I went out with a pair of needle nose pliers and my VOM. I pulled each fuse and checked it for continuity. When I got to Gauge 2, it was blown. I swapped it with the Heated Mirror 10A (I don't have heated mirrors) and everything came back! Cruise, shifter lights, back up lights, defroster... Damn glad I didn't take it to the dealer and pay the diagnostics fee to find it was a blown fuse! Thanx to all the responders!

Now to the real question, ROOT CAUSE.
What was hit during the cleaning session that caused the fuse to open???
There might be a problem developing, a design flaw, an unusual event, or something was done that shouldn't have been.
Just some food for thaught.
Glad it's working!!!!!!!!
