Tonight I traveled from san gabriel area to santa ana while the O/D is OFF and it's about 45 min one way. Surprisingly, I found out that it took about 1 bar of gas for round trip. It's this normal. That a lot of gas to consumed. Thanks
In doing so, you prevent the transmission from going into 4th gear (overdrive) and you prevent the torque converter from locking up. This will require more fuel because the engine has to spin at higher RPMs and the torque converter not locking up will waste energy.

The only time you want to have the overdrive off is when you are pulling a heavy load up a hill or accellerating hard to get to speed. In 100k miles I likely unclicked od less than ten times. Think of it as driving around town and never getting out of first gear.

In addition to what gdanaher said, the only other time I can see turning O/D off is if your driving in a hilly area, where it's constantly shifting between 3rd and 4th.

I've also used it to help control the speed descending large hills. The engine brake helps slightly.
