5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
The Toyota recommended interval for the '07 Camry (and probably their other cars, although I'm not certain) is every 5k miles; that's when I change my oil. The warning light in the dash is set to blink at 4500, and then stay on at 5000.
I came from the old school of changing the oil and filter a 3k, and still do. Anyone else?
Unless you are driving under very severe conditions or using a cheapo oil like Super Tech, it is not necessary to change the oil at 3000 miles. By severe conditions, I don't mean hot Florida weather either. I mean driving in conditions that don't allow the oil to warm up properly like miles of stop and go or engine on and off, for example, if the vehicle was used to make deliveries.
I could tell you used to own an GM car or similar American brand car. Right?
Toyota and Honda can go longer between oil changes.
For Toyota, you can do it every 5,000 miles.
What is it that makes Toyotas and Hondas special that they can go 5k?
I had a 03 and 05 Toyota and changed oil every 3k. Can't hurt. I was just curious if there were any 3k changers left.

Any shelf bought Synthetic you would be safe going 6k intervals. Any Dino oil, I wouldn't go more than 3k unless its Castrol GTX which can safely go to 5k on most engines.

Actually WalMart's SuperTech might be priced cheap but the oil quality is very good. Test results show it lasting till 5k without having issues.
It also comes down to if your motor is FI or NA. On a FI car, the oil circulates through the center of the until to cool it down and lubricate the bushing. The oil does get hot quicker thus loosing some of its properties and therefore should be changed every 3-4k miles. It is also a good idea to use a higher grade oil on an FI car due to the greater wear and tear. An NA car does not normally need to be changed until around 5k miles but driving conditions stated above also help determine when the oil should be changed. If you do not know how to change your own oil, here is a good article....

What does owning an american car have to do with anything? Not sure where you came up with this folklore......
Caddy's have oil life monitors and when I had my STS depending on how the car was driven etc., oil changes were at 7k and sometimes 8k depending. Last time I check a Caddy was an american car.
