Code P0446 and extended warranty question

Hi all,

I am new to this forum.

I recently had a Check engine warning on my 2002 Camry and went to the dealer for a verification. They diagnosed a P0446 code. It reads like this:
  • CAUSE: "Tested with TDT retreived code P0446. Evaporative emission control system vent control malfunction. Tank By-Pass VSV at charcoal canister has open circuit."
  • CORRECTION: "Need to replace tank By-Pass VSV at Charcoal Canister. Clear code and re-test."
They gave me a price of 530$ (CAN) to replace the thing (they told me that they have to replace the whole charcoal canister w valve).

My questions are:
  1. Is this a "fair" price?
  2. Since I purchased the Toyota extended warranty for 7 years or 120,000 Km (75,000 Miles), my Camry has 85,000 Km and 5.5 years, I thought that all emission control components were covered. Toyota Canada told me that this part was not covered. I am skeptical about that. Because my warranty says that valves from the gaz system are covered. Did any of you encountered this issue?
Thank you very much for your feedback and answers.

Rene

bumper to bumper warrenty? or just the powertrain? If it's powertrain, it's not covered.

It's called EXTRA CARE PROTECTION (ECP):

Toyota.ca writes about it:
Q: What is ECP?

A: With ECP, your new Toyota has inflation protected coverage on mechanical failures. It's the affordable and cost-effective way to guarantee your peace of mind and to protect your investment whether you buy or lease. ECP Plans will cover you on up to 17 major mechanical component groups after the manufacturer's warranty expires.

Go back and carefully read the manual you received when you purcahsed the warranty. It should specify what is and what is not covered. If you can't find it and/or are not sure, and it is a Toyota warranty, then call Toyota corporate customer service at 1-800-331-4331. They will check and tell you what is covered under your waranty.

look in the online manual, sounds like something simple to replace yourself.

check warranty first.

Sounds like you have a powertain warranty. In which case it wouldnt be covered. The Vsv on the charcoal canister is only available with the whole canister. I dont know why they dont just sell them seperatly. Well, I take that back I do know why. So they can get more money out ouf you. We have replaced a few of those, the price you were quoted is not unusual. Its mostly just the cost of the part, the labor isnt too involved.
