Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
recently, my I4 XLE camry with abs came up with a cel P0500 - Vehicle Speed Sensor A Malfunction. Could someone tell me where the vehicle speed sensor is located? i doubt this thing's hard to service, but so far i have no luck finding it. if anyone has its location please let me know asap, thanks.
i had the same problem.. the car shifted like shit in my 05 till i got it changed. Heres what it says on the recpt... "Tech replaced speed sensor Found failed for code PO500"...Parts....Decription-Sensor, Transmiss. It also has a part # 89413-08020 (keep in mind this is for an 05 with the 5 speed auto) not the 03

my local autozone carries the part, but if i want to replace it myself i need to know where it is...moreover, it says vehicle speed sensor a...so i'm assuming there's more than one, therefore i need to know exactly where "a" is.

my guess would be somewhere near the driveshaft before it goes into the diff. Just look for wires going in/arround the trans.

Does the speedometer work OK? If so, the sensor is OK. Look on top of the differential housing. It is held in by one bolt, has two wires attached via a plug. Also check the wiring.

the speedo's reading fine, but when the code pops up the auto tranny would just bog down like it's high on drugs. so according to what you're saying, it's probably the wiring. recently the code hasn't came back though...when it comes up again i'll crawl down there and check it out. thanks.
ok so i found the vehicle speed sensor...but when i look up the catalog, there's also a "front/rear speed sensor (right/left)." how do i know if the description on "vehicle speed sensor a malfunction" is the one sitting above the auto transmission?
i should also mention...so far i haven't seen any abs light go up, only erratic shifting on the auto transmission, and sometimes it won't go over 40mph (which is probably because of the poor shifting didn't go up gears). if i try to clear the code, the p0500 cel would random come back on whenever it feels like it.

I know when it happend to me the car got stuck in 3rd and i hit the rev limitor then droped into 4th and lurched forword very hard. Also On a cold start it would go over 3000 rpm's then drop to 1000 and back up too 2000

I got my Wife's LE to do it today...only code the 2005 has ever thrown since new. I was messing around in the snow with the e-brake and hitting the gas. The ABS does not like that and after about 3 minutes it tossed a CEL P0500 per a ScanGauge II. I reset the light and it has not returned...we'll see.
I encounter a fail smog today due the P0500 code, When i went to get my car smog today, there was no check engine or nothing, what can cause the speed sensor to malfunction during a smog test
2007 Camry LE just gave this code, do I need to take in for a part replacement?

Just as info in case anybody else experiences it...
One of my headlamps blew out and two days later my car was acting funny with lights flickering. My dome light would turn off when I would open the door and the chime would only work once, just like as if the battery was dead. The car started fine though. The next morning on the way to Auto zone to get a headlight, the CEL came on with the P0500 code (checked at autizone), and at the same time my ABS light came on and my radio turned itself off. 5 minutes later everything was working fine but the CEL was still on. I got home, replaced the headlamp, and the CEL turned off.
Gotta love electronics. I'm just gonna write this one off and pretend it never happened. lol
