5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
wondering if anyone has any experience of this for the gen5 I4, I've been looking into ZPI stage 0 turbos apparently would need a fuel injector upgrade to at least 440cc and a good tune-up but other than that anyone try to retro this tC package for our camry ? I'm guessing all the piping will be off but we have much more space so think this shouldn't be too hard just need a good local shop sort of thing to make some brackets and bend some new pipes that will fit well
anyone at all did anything with the gen5 yet? I'm still under warranty so i'm not trying to go much over minimum 5-6psi for the power I want atm so I keep the engine on the safe side but I have a feeling I'll be sticking to my car more if I get this rather than moving on and getting some other V6 sedan cause I love the cam haha o ya trd sway bar in the mail...fogs on the ground hopefully will get started on it later this week after a couple more parties :-D
haha let me know, anyone who has any info in general post it too i'm welcome to it,i've only been looking at turbos last couple of days
Go there. Our engine can take up to 9PSI on stock internals without blowing anything up. I was doing the research cuz I was gonna do it to mine, but i've decided to just wait and i'll do stuff to my next car, which will prolly be a v6 camry. that site has a t3/t4 turbo where the wastegate is already preset to 9PSI. It will fit in our cars, there's just a little custom stuff you might have to do to get it to fit in our engine compartment. That turbo will fit and will not blow ur engine unless u are a dumbass and change the wastegate setting before swapping other parts. Go on ebay and you can get the turbo for about 200$. Inner cooler is always a good idea, but before you do that, you might wanna start on the internals, cuz the innercooler might make the pressure seem increased just cuz the air is cooler.
9's a bit much since it's my first project in general i'll go with a small turbo and lower psi to try to get my power up in the low rpm's zpi uses 16g turbo which is better for lower range rpms than t3/t4 from what i've heard i don't wanna rev my engine at high rpm all the time just to get that power :-)
plus I was looking at the turbonetics kits also, cause I'll need more than just the turbo, dunno if I should go with a short ram + K&N for the intake or try to do something similar to what we have stock now just make the lead to the turbo with a custom pipe and a filter....somehow heh would make it look much neater but umm ya still need the blow off valve, manifold, intercooler and a looot of pipes lol after that a good tune up plus some electrical control also I'm guessing
If I can get this up and running with ~250hp/tq i'll be happy I'm not trying to reach for the stars hehe
Well 8PSI ain't too powerful but yea, revving up for the power is a drawback. You could always try for another turbo with a custom housing, which is a bit creative, but can also cost some CHA-CHING$$$
turbonetics has alot of stuff. i did see someone on cardomain.com that had a 03 solara with a TRD supercharger in it, and as the camry has the same engine as the solara, i dont see why it wouldn't fit. If you wanna go that route.
EDIT:Not to mention the fact that superchargers add power through a larger RPM range whereas there's the lag time for the turbo.
I didn't know the 03 had the same engine as the gen 5...i thoguth it was only the v6 model. The gen 1 solara is the only one that has the I4 model that the gen 5 guys have.
the trd s/c adds like 50hp and less torque heh I looke into it for the price the turbo is better I think, plus easier to adapt to a diff car cause onl the piping will be a problem looking from a premade tC one, and psi isn't much but ofc I'd like 6 better haha, I sent turbonetics an email will see what they tell me
ive heard the tC superchrager fits our cars with minor modifications....just the replacement of a bracket and some minor ecu work and youre set
plus it works for a/t as well as m/t

I have thought about adding a TRD tC supercharger many times.
I'm familiar with getting a GM vehicle reprogrammed by PCMforLess or others. Is there someone that does Toyota's thats credible? I'm not familiar with modding imports and my dealer experience gives me little insight.
I don't have any problems fabricating brackets or mounts. I just got done fabricating a new mounting system for the alternator on my LT1 Formula and make alot of stuff myself for that car.

I know someone who's added a s/c on their gen4, but in aus.
He thinks that for this s/c to work, just need a piggyback ECU upgrade if its run under 5psi..
I checked with this guy that has a custom auto shop about 30mins from my house. He said that you have to change more things for the s/c than with a turbo. The gears and ratios are too different with the tc and the camry even though they're the same thing. Basically he said that the scion s/c would probably blow our engine cuz of the different gears and such.
EDIT: By the way, I take this dude's word as gospel. I know he knows what he's talking about, cuz he's got the only porche carrera gt4 in MD and has a 30,000 dollar porsche flex body kit. He's got some serious wrench time in the car. Also, when you look at the car, imagine it in white, cuz that's what it changes to when you look straight at it from the front back or side. Some serious custom paint work, cuz its the white diamond white of cadillac that it changes to.
