Gen5 *update*quick DIY shifter lights (new pics in pg2)

A new idea, Red colored shifter, (instead of the green)

There are wide angle 4.8mm LEDs..@ 20mA.

but now i'm tempted to change the Cd player...the aircon knobs to red too..

That looks good.

I'm content with mine being green (I think).

The lights in my Formula are all red so it doesn't really stand out to me.

I like the red.

Why would you think it looks "bloody"?

dont' know , maybe its an "asian" connotation referring to red as bloody ...
but then most euro cars use red interior..like the passat we have..

I'm yet to try a blue....make it look ricey.

If you do figure out how to change the HVAC color let me know. I was going to try and change mine but there is a green filter on the backside of the indicator and it dosen't look very easy to remove. I was thinking of printing it onto some clear plastic and cutting out a new plexi thing. I would also guess it would be diffcult to do the actualy buttons too.

Can you tell me how you got that center console off? Cuz I wanna change the bulbs too, and haven't quite figured out how to get in there. Not to mention the fact, is that 4 bulbs on a strip or something? The pix alittle fuzzy.

Normally there is one bulb with a green condom on it. I think the red LED is a custom job. I replaced mine with a white LED and no condom.

to remove the console, its just some tabs, refer to the manual, i think its all there.

Yes, i thought there was a lot of space so I decided to put a small pcb on it

if you try to use replacement LED bulbs for the incandescent bulbs in the HVAC, it won't be enough light to make a difference. and yes, the green filter is pretty much impossible to remove cleanly... i had the same idea as you to cut my own clear/frosted plastic rings (just haven't gotten around to it).

what i've done in the meantime is create my own LED arrays in the shape of the rings. 4 SMT leds light up each half of the ring. I chose to use blue and blue/red for the temp controls... but because of the green filter, its glows more of an aqua blue.

the buttons are actually probably the easiest to change the color of, because they're actually leds... none of the incadescent crap or green filters. you will have to remove the buttons and knobs as well as the circuit board to access the leads to the leds. once you can do that, its an easy process. you might have to grind down the bases of the leds to the same shape as the originals... the holder for the leds do not have a completely round shape (notches and flat spots).

So LE05, you did change the color of the fan speed and airflow? With the filter out, I tried shining different lights through it but everything looked ugly, so I gave up.

midnightmach, I have the same head unit as you in my 93, except mine is crap and is almost dead.
