If you do figure out how to change the HVAC color let me know. I was going to try and change mine but there is a green filter on the backside of the indicator and it dosen't look very easy to remove. if you try to use replacement LED bulbs for the incandescent bulbs in the HVAC, it won't be enough light to make a difference. and yes, the green filter is pretty much impossible to remove cleanly... i had the same idea as you to cut my own clear/frosted plastic rings (just haven't gotten around to it).
what i've done in the meantime is create my own LED arrays in the shape of the rings. 4 SMT leds light up each half of the ring. I chose to use blue and blue/red for the temp controls... but because of the green filter, its glows more of an aqua blue.
the buttons are actually probably the easiest to change the color of, because they're actually leds... none of the incadescent crap or green filters. you will have to remove the buttons and knobs as well as the circuit board to access the leads to the leds. once you can do that, its an easy process. you might have to grind down the bases of the leds to the same shape as the originals... the holder for the leds do not have a completely round shape (notches and flat spots).
