Any ideas on how to narrow down whether it's the window regulator or something else? I've been taken for a ride at dealerships before, and I like to know the problem before bringing it to them.

in my 94 maxima, i took the panel off and could

see the steel cable of the track, but i just did not want to mess with it so i took it to the dealer.

it happened to both front doors. and back doors.

i woud say take the panel off and have a look.

test the switch with an ohmmeter.

good luck.

I had this problem too on my 4 door V6 - but i noticed BOTH rear windows would not work. I went to take the door apart til i saw a sticker on the rear door, there is an additional child-proof lever or button thing that you need to turn on, located on the rear doors, its a little lever or button - i drove some people in my car and somebody threw the switch, so putting it back how it is supposed to be (unless you own some dumb kids that like to jump out the window of your car) fixed it.
If only the one window doesnt work though, and the other 3 are fine, here's some things to check.

Remove the switch or wire in any other kind of switch temporarily to close the contacts and see if the window now works, if it does, you know what to do.

if this doesnt do it remove the panel and jiggle the wires on the window motor, bang on it a little, see if you can make it work or get some movement out of it. If you can hear the window motor trying to work, maybe the glass is jammed in its track and the motor can't move it.

Peel back the rubber boot covering the wires at the door connector and look for fraying etc.

Use a vom or trouble light and check for power to the motor. Also check for power at the switch.

If messing with the switch does nothing, and the motor is getting power, you probably need to change the window motor.

Hans,
If you are good with dc electricity and aren't afraid of this try the following. First, find the fuse and verify it isn't blown. If it isn't then continue. The motor is a reversable unit with a negative pole and two positives--one for up and one for down. Remove the door panel and find the motor and the electrical connections to it. Unhook the connector. Run a pair of FUSED (~10 amps) wires from the battery to the motor. 16 guage or larger should be fine for this. Connect the negative to the negative spade connector on the motor. Which is negative? Look at the plug you pulled off and check for continuity between the wires and ground. Touch the positive wire from the battery to one of the remaining spades on the motor. Nothing? Touch the positive wire to the other remaining spade on the motor. Nothing? Motor is bad. If motor works both ways, then the switch is bad.
