5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Just wondering if anyone cross shopped those two. I was all set on a LE V6 and was kind of timid to pull the trigger becasue of the transmission flair and stinky AC issues i read here. SO i started looking for an alternative.
The Legacy is top rated in terms of safety from both IIHS and gov't. Granted it's a bit smaller and pricer but I think it made up in all wheel drive and slightly better handling. I am loooking at the 08 Legacy 3.0R which sticker around 30k and it's comparable with a loaded XLE V6. I was thoroughly impressed with the interior design and handling.
Would appreicate anyone who have crossed shopped those two and share you opinion.
id go with an SE V6 camry....
i like subies, but they feel cheapish to me...i dunno i just never felt like they had the solid build of a toyota or honda...they are fun to drive for sure tho and theyre great looking cars
its a tossup...i love both the camry and LGT....LGT is more of a performance car and the camry is more of a practical car...depeds on what u want in a car
comparing the legacy to the camry is apples to oranges. the camry is a more luxurious, spacious, and economical car while the leggie is the more about performance and handling. the legacy completely blows the camry out of the water in that regard.
i was about a signature away from the leggy but pulled back at the last minute because i thought about all the family trips that i might be taking. i felt that i didn't need something overly aggressive on the road and i didn't want to sacrifice any more trips to the gas station.
some other observations about the legacy i want to make are its engine-. i read a lot about turbo lag on the legacy forums but did not experience that during the testdrive. and from my own experience, the engine is a bit loud when driving at "highway" speeds. i had to turn the radio volume up pretty high compared to the camry at those speeds due to engine noise. the engine seems to be "working hard" every time but that may seem to be part of the engineering design of the boxer engine.
Ya the Legacy and the Camry are two different car classes, in size and purpose. Something I had noticed though while working at a Subaru dealer is that some of the problems that people came in with was electrical issues with the Subaru's as well as the clutches basically falling apart. I've never seen so many damn warranty clutch assembly replacements in my lifE! The electrical issues were solenoid packs and sensors blowing after like only 15,000-20,000 miles, which is just silly.
I actually looked at the Legacy as well when buying me SE and I'm am very happy that I chose the SE. Just like what everyone said, it's either performance of comfort. I opted to go for the SE mainly because it is very comfy on the inside and everything seems to fit in place for the driver and passenger. It also has that slight sporty look that I still want. The Legacy makes me feel cramped on the inside and feels like it's working all the time... mainly due to the AWD and turbo. I figured that I would have the car for about 8 years and with Toyota reputation, I decided to go with it. I am not 100% sure, but I think they finally got rid of the flares in the newer models. I haven't been around this forum in a while, s I haven't heard much. Besides, if something major ever does happen in the 8 years I have my car, it's easier and cheaper to get Toyota parts than Subaru parts. Good luck and I hope you get the one that suits your needs!
I looked hard at a 2.5GTB before getting my Camry (and my cousin owns one). They are fun, relatively comfortable and have tremendous mod capabilities. Like someone else said, the interiors are cheaper plastic than the Camry (and many compalin about our Cams).

I recently drove the Legacy GT auto. It is vastly different than the Camry in many ways but I still really liked it. It's definitely on the sporty side. The biggest surprises were the super short gearing. I think it was turning about 2800rpm at only 70mph... the Camry is about 2000rpm at that speed. I also appeared to have a very weak AC unit. The car I drove was sitting INSIDE the showroom so it was perfectly cool. It was over 110 degrees when I drove it and the AC actually seemed kind of strained to keep up - the fan speed was nearly on high the entire test drive and it never felt all that cool. If my Camry is pre-cooled like that I don't need the AC on anything over the 2nd to lowest fan speed for it to keep things cool no matter how hot it is outside. My WRX didn't have the greatest AC either so it's probably a Subie thing.
