Your car ran smoother with a different oil from a different company? It's not the oil because it is basically the same oil (just refined differently and different additives). More than likely it's the oil filter, yet I don't understand how that would make a difference either...

I use to work for Valvoline and I would know how car's ran with different types of oil and oil filters. Personally speaking, Mobil 1 is the best motor oil. (Full Syn)

Any Mobil 1 product is good. I would still suggest though that you still change your oil everyone 3000 miles, Full Syn or not.

And Mobil 1 is a lot more expensive.

How old was the Castrol oil when you changed it? If you've had the old oil for 10000 miles you will definitely notice a difference when you switch the oil regardless of the brand.

The oils should be on par unless you go synthetic.

Full Syn costs at least 5.50-6.00 USD.

As for regular... well, I don't even use regular. I've always used Full Syn on every car I have from day one.

The only reason I can see for an oil change improving performance is if the new oil has a lower viscosity. But I wouldn't expect that to be noticeable...

I use only Castrol, 5w20 or 10w30.

FWIW, I change my oil every 5000-7500 miles. Personally, I think it's a waste to change it more often than that under normal circumstances. With as many cars as I maintain (all Toyotas of course), I'd be changing the oil in something about every weekend if I went to a 3000-mile schedule.
