Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Why am I getting such bad gas mileage.
I get about 350 before my light turns on.
San Francisco.
Mostly freeway driving.
I try to keep my RPMs low while city driving.
Horrible
25 average MPG.
Supposed to be like, 29/34 or something?
What am I doing wrong.
I tried 87 octane, as well as 89, same.
Am i retarded.
Well I'm getting about the same myself. But whenever I fill up the tank after the light comes on, I get about 14 to 15 gallons filled up. And the 2007 Camry has an 18.5 gallon tank. So that might explain why we get the light coming so early. I was surprised last friday when I was stuck in traffic for two hours with the light on. So I'm guessing that 4 gallon reserve is where the rest of our mileage goes.
At 25 miles per gallon, you can go about 460 miles before ou suck fumes and wait for roadside service. Nice to have idiot lights, but keep it in perspective.

I get about 30-31 mpg with about 90% highway driving, but thats with the I4. Do you have the V6?
i have the I4 and also am only getting 25 mpg combined .... 85% highway (i drive 100 miles a day to work) i do drive the car harder than most, most likely - about 80-85 mph most of the time. living in eastern pa and using 87 octane .......

Thats old EPA testing. New EPA will get more "realistic" numbers. I too get 24 to 25 mpg with 50/50 driving. My wife's old 2003 V6 mustang would get 24 mpg. I4 is underpowered for a sedan. That is why V6 get better mpg.
Just remember:
I4 for small compact cars
V6/I6 for medium size vehicles (sedans, small p/u trucks)
V8 for anything bigger
I4 on a small SUV or sedan is a joke, they should never do that, but hey people still believe that smaller engine uses less fuel, lies, lies, only if its a small car.
I drive a 2005 Dodge Ram V6, quad cab, I saw the epa sticker 17/21, I get 15 to 16 mpg. I was suckered twice. So dont feel bad

Uh, my 04 I4 gets a consistent 32mpg on the freeway. This is with a 2 people and the backseat and trunk full doing 75+mph. My dad's 04 v6 Sienna gets 24mpg on the freeway (although the computer says its doing 27mpg). We calculate every fill up.
I do know that if I use cheap-o Vons gas (still $3.50/gal ) my milage goes down to 29mpg. So what I do is fill up with Chevron every 3 tank.

ROFL, well that would explain your situation. I do very hard driving, as in 95-100 in a 55. Hard turns at high speeds. All that stuff and in MD. I use mid-grade and seem to actually be lasting longer which is a shocker to me.
EDIT: You guys also have to remember that the cars advertised mileage is almost never the true mileage. About the same idea as the RX-8 Having so much less HP than advertised.

I think it might be because of where you are driving. I spent 3 weeks in San Francisco earlier this year with my 07 Camry I4 5M and had the worst gas mileage compared to where I live in SoCal.
From here to SF is about 530 miles and I achieved over 35 MPG coming back from SF. Going up to SF it was a bit less because I got stuck in traffic on 580, 80, and 101. Only after I got on 280 did it clear up.
Driving around town and throughout the SF Bay Area I only got maybe 27 MPG combined. To date, that is my worst mileage ever. Most of my driving was in the the City with some trips going as far south as Mountain View and a few trips across to Oakland and towards Vacaville.

I do mainly city and get about 23-25 mpg... when I go 50/50 it's about 25-27 mpg... I've only done 90% highway once and got 29 mpg when I filled up that one time.
When I get back to the State (on vacation right now), I'm going to change my oil again (2nd time) and check my tire pressure. I heard that the mpg gets better after the 2nd or 3rd oil change. Tire pressure also makes a huge difference. So check that as well.
V6 SE (auto, obviously). 90% highway driving between 70 - 80mph. 3 adults in the car. Hilly highways (going through some ski mountains).
I'm getting approx 28mpg per fill up. I don't wait for the light, as there is too much risk I'll get stranded, so I fill up around 1/4 tank left, usually 14 or so gallons each time. I calculate it manually mostly each time to get around 28mpg. Sometimes a little less, sometimes a little more.
damnit
i thought maybe my car was broken.
i know it gets a lot less than estimated
but people are getting good numbers still.
my car does feel like the idle is kinda low.
i thought maybe there was a TSB or something
it's a 4 banger
