Gen 6 cardboard spare tire cover broke after I put my sub on it.
Gen 6 cardboard spare tire cover broke after I put my sub on it. It's only a single 12" subwoofer enclure by MTX. The total weight, according to my scale, is only 37 pounds.
A 6-inch section(betwee the jack and the spare tire) simply broke off cleanly after I put the sub there....
Is this cardboard-type material supposed to be this weak? I'm thinking about taking the whole cover and ask my friend to cut out a piece of MDF in the exact shape...
Anyone elase with broken/cracked spare tire cover?

It's a 6-inch corner that broke off... I heard it break off and picked up the jagged piece...
(not that other sepearte piece that covers only the jack)
Ah ok, I was thinking about that piece that covers the jack. I can't imagine it'd break that easily. Did you drop the sub box in there or something causing a hard impact?

Just went to the garage and tried it again... that cardboard thing breaks off quite easily... I snapped off another corner using just two fingers. What the heck was I thinking??? Oh well, it's alreday broke in the other corner, I need to get a new one anyway... I'm sure it's available for the reasonable price of $500 from Toyota parts!
Guess I'll have to call of the competition that I had planned: "how many people can I stuff in the trunk of my one-day-old new Camry?"

the spare cover in my gen 5 is pretty strong actually....ive had plenty of weight back there before and no breakage...
ill have to look into the gen 6's spare tire cover at work and see if theyre all that weak....that shouldent happen

Okay... I just confirmed that it was only the one on my car. I stopped by my friend's house and tried his Camry('07 purchased more than a year ago) The spare tire cover on his Camry was very solid. Perhaps I just got one that was made out of bad material? Going to stop by the dealer and ask them to replace one under warranty tomorrow.

I don't think they'll doubt me. Like I said, I can break off pieces of that board with just two fingers, with little force.
Now that I think about it, I'm wondering if there might have been moisture in the trunk that caused the board to become so weak.
I broke mine as well within the first week of ownership. I was putting in my sub as well and it snapped. It is so cheap. I went to the dealer and asked them if it was ok to put a bag of softner salt in the trunk from the grocery store. He said yes... then I replied good because this thing broke.(I didn't want to say I was doing any stereo work). The part is not cheap by any means. So when I got the new one (under warranty) I just guled it back to back with the old one. Now it is strong. No worries.

I went to the dealer this morning and showed them the broken spare tire cover. Without having to say another word, the service advisor had a new one ordered. It'll be here first thing tomorrow morning and it will be covered under warranty. According to her, this is the 5th or 6th spare tire cover that she had to order this week for the '07 Camry. She said all of these were brand new Camrys that were sold at their dealership in the last month.(including my own Camry) Sounds like a problem with the supplier that sold the covers to Toyota?
I wonder if they'll let me keep the old cover so I can glue it back-to-back with the new one, just like what you did...
