why does Toyota put discontinued tires on my new Camry?(Michelin MXV4 S8)
why does Toyota put discontinued tires on my new Camry? According to the tire manager at my local Costco, whom I've known for 10 years, the Michelin MXV4 S8 is a discontinues tire. (replaced by the "Primacy" tires)
If anyone took delivery of their Camry in the last few weeks, did you also get the MXV4 S8 tires?
Thanks! Not that I think the MXV4 S8 is a bad tire. That's the exact same tire that came on my cousin's Audi A6 wagon.
Simply because Toyota wants to clear out its inventory of all old tires before going onto newer ones.
Tire model is something that is NOT listed in any car's specification. As long as the car company really delivers the tire size and type (i.e. all-season or summer), then the customer's order has been fulfilled.

Like I said, i'm not complaining about this particular tire. I'm just worried that if one or two becomes damaged beyound repair, I may end up having to buy a whole set of 4. (since there are no more of this discontinued model)
I'm surprised you're complaining about getting your camry with michelin tires... I can understand if you got some cheap bridgestones or something... (we tried bridgestone once and hated the ride and longevity of them).
Besides the reason that Yazovets pointed out, Costco has probably discontinued the line of tires but they may still be in production at Michelin's facilities. IIRC Costco generally picks a product and has it in stock for a few months before getting stock of a different model of tire. Supposedly, its how they offer their lower prices.
Also, according it Toyota's business model (as well as most companies now), its really dumb to have "inventory" of anything. Just-in-time inventory is the way of the future and I'm sure Toyota has already implemented it so tires put onto a Camry on the assembly line are probably only a few weeks old.

Maybe they should throw out the perfectly good MXV4s and give you a set of Primacys!
They are discontinued and all!

Mine came with MXV4 S8 Michellins (built April 2006). They are 215/55/R17. It's a decent set of rubber, and at 29k miles, they atill look good. I haven't measured the tread....but I would guess it is still at 50%. They are currently on sale at tire rack for $130/tire, but Michelin.com still lists them in the standard prodcut section.
