Canada Day Time Running Lights Question - Imported into Canada

I've managed to import a new 07 Camry LE, saved me some money

Question for those with Camry's and other Toyotas/models that have perhaps imported...

Went to Canadian Tire to do RIV inspection, the guy said he was going to have to fail my car because the daytime running lights have an off setting and do not come on automatically. Although if you set them on auto setting they come on and go off....anyways we disagreed and he did not do the inspection. I thought I would try another Canadian tire or could anyone shed some light if they have been in a similar position and what I should do ? (Vancouver, BC area)

RIV requires day time running lights to come on automatically everytime I guess....any suggestions ? Would a BC Toyota dealer do this for me (without being a prick cuz I imported ?

There was a thread on this in April by POPWICH on 04-21-2007, 02:56 AM. It is titled: how to disable "DRL OFF" feature to meet canada regulation?. Use the search feature to find it. To make a long story short, Replace the light stalk with the correct version (no off position). Least hassel.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!

It is not RIV, it is Canadian Regulations that require DRL. Canadian Tire is a designated agent for RIV, thus, they are doing their job - checking compliance. Hence, it does not matter to which CT shop you would go and in which province.
As to Toyota dealer service department, they would be happy to make money on you.
You are not alone to be easily boycotted by a specific dealer, 60,000 cars/year were imported from U.S. to Canada, i.e. big money for service.

if you manage to find the wire that goes to the auto part of the switch, you then can hardwire that wire to either switched 12 or ground, whichever is required. you must look at the online schematics.

should be an easy fix.

Look at my previous post's thread. READ ALL OF IT, SAVE the hassel..... The ONLY two options ARE: Replace the switch or install a "Limit" or "STOP" to prevent the switch from going past "AUTO" to the "OFF" position,,,,, (for proper DRL operation)!!!!

Thanks,

I am going to try the lightstock option first. I assume I can get one of those at a Toyota Parts shop ? i'm not very mechnical, so I hope they are easy to replace.

I'll also call a couple Toyota Dealers to see what they charge.

Thanks Again!

There is a shortcut to the manuals here someware. You have to remove the steering wheel, to replace the switch. I would let the dealer do the job, it will take less than an hour. Then you will pass inspection now and if needed, in the future. (While you are at it, If you have an LE, get the fog light switch. then add the relay and plug in and install the lights aim them, it's done. All of the wires are there. [The correct switch, relay and lights are all that is missing.] GOOD LUCK!!!!!

I recommend you bribe one of those Canadian Tire people so that he would write you a passing certificate or document. That's the easiest way.

from tho 05 schematics looks like you just cut the wire w/the red arrow and tie it to ground. this will enable DRL permanently regardless of the switch stalk position. As always, proceed at your own risk.

Canada

I just imported a Camry also, I suggest you find another Canadian Tire since the inspection is free. There are also other companies who are contracted to do the inspection,

http://www.riv.ca/english/Independen...on-Centres.pdf

I just made sure the DRL'S were turned to the on position before inspection, buddy started the car and asked the other guy if the lights came on. Your contact at Canadian Tire is being a prick, the small indepentant guys don't do these inspections often so I would go that route...........just in case turn the DRL'S on and attach a piece of tape to the back side so it won't turn to the off position.

Yeah, that is an option as well - independant might be better route. Black tape is something I picked up from somewhere else.

When set to Auto and they turn on ok, but when turning the vehicle off....don't your lights stay on for like 30 seconds though ?

Have you tested this? What will the results be with this wire grounded and you move the swith to the Park or Headlight position?????

no i have never tested it.

from the schematics it looks like the switch will work as normal for all functions, except for when you turn the switch to off.

when you turn the switch completely off the DRLs will still come on.

in other words, you will not have control of the DRLs, they are always on as long as the engine is running.

i am just providing this as information, is up to the user to verify and test.

Please search the POPWICH thread. He did this and had adverse results. I am hoping to keep you from going down a previously traveled path.
