Navigation Suggestions

I am looking into a Nav unit for my 2005 SE and I know the Eclipse units are very popular however while looking into them I saw the Alpine IVA-W205 w/blackbird unit. It's awesome how it's integrated into the system, it's removable so you can have a portable GPS on the go or you can slide it into the in-dash unit behind the touch pannel and have a fully integrated nav in your car as well. It's Ipod ready (single cable, no extra unit), rear camera ready and bluetooth as well. They also told me the steering wheel controls work with this unit as well.

I don't know much about all the new navigation units and i wanted to get some opinions from real life users. Any input will be helpful. Thanks!

Here is the unit I am talking about:

The dock 'n' roll feature is what really draws me to this unit.

The eclipse units I am looking into are the AVN6610 or the AVN5510:

I knw people like the eclipse units but I just got the Pioneer Avic-Z2 and it is a sweet unit. Highly recommended.

Also, i believe that eclipse makes a unit with a removable front like you mentioned

the gui on that alpine looks pretty crappy IMO. i have been looking into the Kenwood DDX line for a while and although it does not have GPS built in, it has a separate unit that hooks up to the main unit with a separate disc slot for the nav disc. if u are big on audio, go for the ddx 7017 instead of the 7015 or 6019 b/c the 7017 has 5V preouts as opposed to 2v preouts in the 7015 and 6019. u can also check out the 8017 but the only diff is a subtle color change on the face and 5.1 surround

Rememeber though with the alpine unit the new blackbird B200 has not come out yet and that will be an extra cost on top of the cost of the in-dash unit.

Well you can get them for around $699 but I paid way more then that. But in my defense I didn't do any research/shop around. Was just at the shop and chose from the 2 units they had when my other cd player crapped out. But the price included install and they bypassed it so dvd's can be watched in motion.

I didn't like the style of the detatchable GPS eclipse unit. If i go with eclipse it would be the 5510 or 6610. I havn't really looked into the pioneer units much... Maybe I should, do they also offer the sterring wheel control unit so the controls will work on the pioneer units?

Pioneer makes a steering wheel button cluster that is an add-on, but also you can get an adaptor as well.

hrm, thats a very nice navi, this might be my next mod to my 07se. did it come with steering wheel control adapter or an additional cluster? also this 'bypass dvd in motion' is that something all shops do or is that on special request/mod for this specific unit and car type?

I don't believe it came with any of that.

All in-dash dvd players have to be "bypassed" if you want to be able to watch dvd's while the cars moving. With this unit, without the bypass the car must be in park and the emergency brake must be applied. Doesn't make a difference what car or navi/dvd unit you have.

Most shops won't do this as it's illegal but others will do it for a fee. I just asked them and they did it for free. Takes a whole of 5 mins for them to do if they go slow.

hrm, this unit looks more appealing as i keep reading up on it..i guess i'll give myself some time, i just got the car 2 wks ago so i dont see a rush in ripping stuff apart and adding so quickly, then again it 'would' be nice lol - mentioned that they may be available for 699, thats pretty enticing, then again maybe if i wait it out a month or two it might drop a bit..hopefully.

its not hard to bypass the unit to watch dvd's, minus the new pioneers. on any other unit, all u have to do is ground the wire that is supposed to go to the parking brake. but in the newer pioneers, u have to wire it into the vss wire and that does not allow the grounding mod to work, since the unit can sense the car is in motion. plus i believe the pioneers have a gyrosensor in them which can also sense movement.
