5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
using aftermarket nav/radio in 07 Camry... is it possible to improve radio reception?
I just installed an aftermarket navigation/radio unit in my '07 Camry. It's the
Eclipse AVN6610 DVD navigation system. It is a very familiary interface
and menus for me because my other cars with factory navigation are Lexus
and Toyota.
Everything works great, except radio reception. Yes, I did hook up power that goes to the pre-amplifier in the rear glass, next to the antenna.
Is there something else that I can do to make the radio reception a little
stronger? The stations that I like aren't very strong... but my shower radio
gets better reception than the '07 Camry's rear glass antenna.
I may even be willing to add an external antenna mast(powered or otherwise)
A Shakespeare 4353 would do the trick. It is made for boats, but it is an on glass AM/FM antenna. I forget the gain specs, but it is better than most inline signal amplifiers which can cause 'front end overload' and muck up the frequency cut off by increasing the signal to noise ratio (SNR) which means more interference from neighboring weaker signals.
Or you could go high end for a signal amplifier like the Atmel ATR4251 which has really good specs and filtering, but is primarily made for use in high end head units as part of the tuner circuitry. I'm not sure if they make a commercially available 'box' for consumers.

the stock antenna sucks, why the hell didn't toy put a regular vertical antenna? beats me. cost cutting? low quality? anyway, you probably need a better vertical antenna.
Most makers are moving to a non-visible (glass type or other) antenna to move away from something that is visibly not as aesthetically pleasing or can be broken in the car wash. The reception isn't that much worse than the standard quarter wave antenna we are used to.

I think the car looks nicer without an antenna sticking up, but I never listen to regular radio so not having one is cool with me.

Actually a vertical antenna would be cost-cutting.
I hate those things cuz you gotta take them off each time you're at the carwash.
The Camry looks much better with an intergrated rear-glass antenna - just like the German cars.
Let's leave the ugly vertical antenna concept for shitty GM vehicles such as the GMC Yukon.

True... but my Mercedes' embedded glass antenna has really strong reception, with the
factory MB stereo or aftermarket stereo. (even from FM stations as far as 30 to 40 miles
away.
Actually, after putting in my pioneer Avic i get what at first seemed to be bad reception on the outskirts of my usual radio station (I travel a LOT). What I noticed is that it seems to be picking up another station on the same frequency that I have always had some problems with in this area but I seem to be getting more signal from the secondary source (eg. interference) making it sound like I'm getting worse signal. Maybe this is the problem you're having?

That is called poor channel selectivity which is usually coupled with too much gain and not enough bandpass filtering.
