Gen5 Wierd stereo problem

This is really odd, and before I started yanking stuff out, I wanted to see if you guys could lend any light on the subject.

I just bought the car (2002 SE), and the stero was in this shape when I got it. It looks stock, but only high treble comes out of the rear speakers, midrange out of the front door speakers (maybe a little bass), and nothing out of the dash speakers. I'm not sure where to start on this one. Also, the left door speaker is intermittent.

it sounds like a lose wire in the left door. i would start thinking about replacing the whole system to include wiring.

since you bought like that there is no telling whats up.

1) Look in the trunk, see if the speaker is full size not just a tweater, should be a "Full Range" speaker.
2) Locate an aceptable/good speaker and unplug the wires from the stock speaker. Connect in a "test" speaker to test the "quality" from the head unit. If it gets better, the speakers (2way) [Hi's in one, Mid and Bass in the other] are blown. Mids and Bass usually get blown first. If it sounds the same, suspect the head unit.

Just a starting point. Good Luck

Well, I popped out the covers on the in-dash speakers, and there is nothing there but wires

Maybe the door speakers are part of a component system? Well, off to the search bar to look for dash speakers...

Do the door speaker grilles pop off? That would save me some serious time!

i dont think so.. taking off the doors takes no more than 10 minutes your first time..

-pop off the triangular piece above the door cover
-pry up the window control piece with a flat head screwdriver(tape it up so you dont scratch it)
-under that will be a screw in the vertical position.. unscrew that
-there are 2 screw covers on the inner part of the door cover.. pop those off with a screwdriver and unscrew these
-pop out the piece behind the door handle..(pry it out right where the lock/unlock slider is(sorry i cant think of what its called)) there will be a screw behind there.. unscrew it
-slide your hands starting from the bottom between the door panel and the door itself. there are ~6 or 7 fasteners(cant think of the name of these either) that will pop out when you pull. make sure you dont leave them in the door. you cant miss them, they are bright green.

that should be it.. i dont think im missing any. you can tell if you are missing any for the door panel will not pop off lol.. leaving work now so post and let me know how you do!

and dont worry, the more you do it, the quicker it is. i can do it in 3 mins flat

Make sure you rolled your window all the way down before taking your door off. It just a lot easier to put it back with the window already down.

Small change

I almost broke the door tim trying to pull it off with the screw still in it

Figured out what was wrong with the left door speaker. Two words: wire taps

I've ordered two dash speakers off eBay. All I need now is a couple of missing preset buttons for the radio (#1 and #5 I think?). I don't know wherether or not I want to buy a new receiver or get a crappy sued one and pull the buttons off (cheaper).

Thanks for your help, guys!

I bought it off AutoTrader from a dealership in Florida sight unseen! I got a good deal on it, 2002 SE w/67k miles for $9900. For that price, I didn't mind that the radio sounded like crap. I can replace that easily. I knew I was going to do a few things to it when I got it.
