5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I was frustrated to find no inexpensive intakes for my 2006 Camry any ware so I took matters into my own hands with great results.
This mod will give increase HP, better sound, a cleaner engine bay, and only cost less that $10! Here is how its done!
Step 1: Buy a 3 cone filter. I got one off ebay for about $7
Step 2: Remove all the stock intake air box parts other that the lower air box section. You will have to unplug the upper airbox section.
Step 3: The upper airbox has a round 3 pipe section molded in where the hose attaches to it. Cut off the round pipe section from the upper airbox. Be careful as it has your airflow sensor inside. Make sure to salvage as much of the pipe as possible because you will need it to attach your cone filter. I used a course hack saw which worked very well.
Step 4: Attach the cut section of plastic pipe you just removed to the cone filter by inserting and tightening the hose clamp. Attach the other side of the pipe to the factory hose and plug the air flow sensor back in. The filter will sit nicely in the lower half of the airbox.
Step 5: Start up and enjoy!
I drove my car all weekend and had no check engine light or problems whatsoever, just more power and better sound. The car is still very quiet but a little louder during hard acceleration. Sounds good!
Eventually I want to fabricate a support bracket and get rid of the other half of the airbox but it works fine as is.
Here is a picture of the results. I hope this helps some of you out!
So basically you made it so your car can take in hot engine air and "sound" faster.
I wouldn't have done that if you GAVE ME $100.
I said to myself this morning....everyone is waiting for TRDVVTi to response to this thread.

From My experience repalcing the restrictive stock intake with the less restictive cone filter gives better throttle response regaurdless of how cold the air is and piping the intake over to cooler air really doesn't make much difference. The throtle response is better and that's what I was going for. You may be able to gain slightly more if placing the filter in a cooler location but we get flash floods here in AZ so I can't stick my air filter in harms way. It must be up high and away from the weel well.
the Weapon-R doesnt add any hp ... it just makes it louder [i have a Weapon-R on my Gen3]
SRI's dont really hurt much of anything, even TRD will agree with me that the HP gain or loss isnt something that you can feel or notice while driving .... however, i think my SRI was worth the money for this reason:
i know my camry is slow ... it was meant to be slow and will always be slow ... so i might as well make it look good and sound nice

i dont mean to be a nuissance here but I have a comment...
my tiburon has an intake on it and it makes the WORLD of difference. Some of you may look at numbers and figure that the stock filter allows enough CFMs to compensate for anything our motors need, but i wouldnt trade my intake off that car for any stock paper piece of shit panel filter with restrictive plumbing you have to offer.
The camry has a stock drop in k&n filter, as I couldnt justify $450 for an AEM intake for such a powerless donkey that the 2az-fe is, and even with that i noticed a significant difference in throttle reponse. power wise, on a car that has no power, hardly noticeable. but throttle response...there can be no argument that an intake helps this 2.4 4cyl piece of wood's throttle response, which, driving in a big city, helps with quick maneouvres and light to light driving.
I know whitechocolate and TRD wont agree, and i mean they WON'T agree, but I consider the intake as an inexpensive and manditory upgrade and I commend bike4miles for making such a great ghetto concept,.

I don't know man, but my gen 5 2.4L is pretty quick...I get a lot of compliments on how quick it is. It has power when I need it. IMO!
