Gen5 2.0L VVTi Intake

Hello guys. Was hoping to get some of your inputs re: possible intake options for a Gen 5 2.0L VVTi 4-banger. (For reference, the available engines in the Philippine market are the 2.0L 4, and the 2.4L 4 which is available in the USDM, together with the 3.0L V6)

Option 1: replace the stock cotton air filter element with a drop-in freeflow air filter element (like K&N, APEXi, etc.), since the intake tube of the Gen 5 takes its air from behind the grille and above the radiator.

Option 2: retain the intake tube (as pictured in Option 1), and replace the stock airbox with a tube and an open type filter

in the case of the 2.0L VVTi engine, a single intake tube runs from above the radiator, downwards, then under the battery, then up to the bottom of the stock airbox (as pictured in Option 2).

if i do go for option 2, and make sure that the intake tube pumps its air directly to the open type intake, will i still benefit from the colder air? or will the intake tube now be useless?

Thanks.

i would take out the airbox and extend the tubing to somewhere in the front air dam

or put in a "free flow" filter (drop in kind) and get rid of the snorkel that sucks hot air in, and is very restrictive, just rip all that garbage out unless it gets to -20C over there

2.0 camry, man that must be slow

Thanks Oldman!

For reference:
2.0L=149HP/192Nm
Slower than the 2.4L, but since we don't have too many open highways here, just about enough, i guess.

To clarify your suggestions:

So you're suggesting that i also remove the stock intake tube so i can make way for the tube to run all the way from the sensor to the filter in the front air dam?

yeah, take everything upstream of the air box off, for sure, all that does is give more restriction and warm up the air (only good if its really really cold)

ok, if i do that, from where will i be getting my air? wouldn't the air coming from the engine compartment be hotter than that taken thru the intake tube?

yeah, in the states we only got 2.4 and 3.0

149 hp out of the 2.0 though? that's not that bad, the 2.4 has 157 or 158. I don't know how to convert the torque figures, but we got 162ish lb-ft, so i don't know how that compares to your 192 Nm so it's not too abd, and probably lighter too.

I've driven a 2.0 camry! i was underpowered...but overall it doesn't feel too much out of place. For a while all we got was the 2.0's and the 3.0's! (also called Grande).

thanks for the replies guys! will do some more window shopping for ideas.

edfrsd,
they gave us the 2.0L and 2.4L versions in AT only, cuz the Camry is more of mid-sized luxury sedan in the RP market. sadly, no MT option and no V6
