2002 camry roars

2002 Camry with 115,00 miles makes a roaring sound at the rear, similar to having a motorcycle run along side the car. seems like it may be on the driver's side rear.
any suggestions?

Only thing back there I think would be the axle or exhaust? Maybe a hole in the exhaust system somewhere?

Maybe due for a new mufler? I would take a look under there and see what condition your pipe is in.

Is it vehicle speed related?

Is it engine load related?

Is it engine speed related?

More information will help out.

2002 camry

It is certainly speed-related. Does not make the sound unless the car is rolling.
Cannot be exhaust, i feel, since (a) the pipe is in great condition--i checked; and (b) it does not make the sound at a standstill,.
The sound starts of rather faint, but when the car gets up to a steady speed, you can certainly hear the roar, again, like that of a motorcycyle being outside the car with the windows up.
Also, I can manipualte the transmission and engine through the gas pedal, and the sound does not get louder or more harsh.

so when you're in neutral and revving? the sound doesn't come up?

hmmm, check wheels and around that area. Maybe something dragging hitting the wheels.

Tires are new, and there is nothing touching them.

Typically that motorcycle or lawnmower type sound is a wheelbearing noise. Does it get any louder when you make a left or right turn?

Block the front tires with a brick or something, jack the rear up with the parking brake released and spin the tire/wheel. Listen to it. Feel it for roughness. If you hear nothing and feel nothing and you are working on the problem side, take the wheel off and do the same thing with the drum. Turn it slowly and keep both hands on it. The movement should be smooth and without any roughness. If in doubt, check the opposite side for comparison purposes. If you know the sound is not from the muffler, if you can rev the engine while standing still and there is no sound, and the sound is only present while moving, then the problem has to be the wheel bearing. Nothing else is moving back there.

It's either the wheel bearing or the tire itself.

Just found out from the dealer that it's the wheel bearing assembly, $570.
Does that sound right--the price?
