5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I had these installed a couple of weeks back but never got around to taking pics. Here are some terrible pics from the weekend at the cottage:
No, those are NOT scratches on my bumper near the leftmost sensor. That's a lot of dirt which I earlier brushed by with my pants.
I've always sworn by Parktronic sensors when parking. These make parking a breeze with the Camry. It has a sloped rear glass and trunk, and I can never really see where the car ends in the back. Now there's no guessing!

Looking good. Don't you just love trips to the cottage? all the bugs that we murder with our bumpers and windsheild? My car looks horrible, but i'm going back up this weekend, so no point in washing it.
Hahaha yeah we do murder a lot of insects on the highways. Once I arrive at the cottage, my front bumper looks like it has some sort of illness with all those splats.
My parktronic system was actually a two-step process. All parts are genuine Toyota accessories. Apparently the Camry is pre-wired for such an install (but only in the rear, not front).
When I first bought the car, I had that dealer install the rear parktronic system (Toyota calls it Park Pilot). They charged me about $400 Canadian which included taxes, installation and parts.
But when I went to pick up, I found out that they had just installed a 2-sensor system (1 sensor on each corner of the bumper). Well that's shitty I thought cuz I couldn't get proper rearward "imaging".
So a few months later, I paid another dealer to add two more sensor. The sensors are $30 each. Then I had another $160 of labor cuz they had to take apart the bumper again.
Apparently, Toyota carries a two-sensor system, and also a four-sensor system.
In both cases, the signaling unit is capable of running 4 sensors. So instead of buying another $400 new 4-sensor system, I got away with a total cost of $220 for adding 2 more sensors to my existing 2-sensor system.
The kit includes a defeat button which gets mounted just above the parking brake on the left. Each time you put the car in reverse, the system activates and beeps twice to let you know. Hitting the button will kill the system for that particular "reverse run". It will re-active itself each time you get in reverse though.
It beeps with shorter intervals as you get closer to objects. Once you get a solid tone, you have 8 inches back tot he closest obstacle.
Toyota does offer the system with painted sensors to match your colors, but that will have to be a custom-order since dealer just keep stock of black ones (suited me perfectly!).
Install time is about 3-4 hours.

I tried to order the Park Pilot for my new (ordered but not yet received) 2008 Red Camry XLE but the dealer (Denver Metro area) said they are not available. Seems like you can get it in Canada but not in the US unless you go aftermarket.

If you want shipped from Canada, contact me by PM. I can get you a dealer price quote for the parts, and ship them to you. You would be responsible for your shipping costs, duties and parts costs naturally...

The camera is a neat idea, but what do you do with that ugly "stick-on" monitor? Where would you put that without killing the nice OEM look of the interior?
