Gen5 Camry Transmission Problems

Is anyone having problems with 2005 3.3L, V6, 5 spd tranny problems? My 2005 Camry SE with this engine/tranny combo is very sluggish, slow to shift, seems to be hunting for the right gear, etc. Bad drivability.

bring it to the dealer if you feel there's something not right, that's what warranty's for. there may be some drive by wire bullshit that's causing your pain.

I have had it to a dealer several times and they say that it is inherent with the 5 spd tranny. I was just wondering if others were experiencing the same thing.

About 30,000 but the dealership is telling that it is normal for the 5 speed tranny from mid 2004 to mid 2006 when they went to the 6 spd. I am trying to see if others are experiencing the same problem so I can go back to the dealer and try to get it fixed.

did you just get the car or have u had it for the whole 30k? maintenance has been kept up to date? if you just got it, you just have to get used to the drive by wire setup. if you are unsure of what this is, search it in the forum for it has been discussed over and over..

OK here is the full story! I bought the car from a dealer with full warranty with about 3000 mi. It now has about 30000 miles. I have had it into the dealer 3-4 times for the same complaint. The first time they down loaded an upgrade to the tranny computer chip. No difference in drivability! The last time the Toyota "zone" or "regional" guy was there and took a test drive with me with a monitor connected connected to the test port. He said that the 5 speed was programmed wrong at the factory and that I would just have to live with it or sell the car - that impressed me! I travel a lot and rent many cars - Sonata, Grand Prix, G6 even a Tauraus an they all respond better than my 2005 Camry! Within a mile or so of returning to my car from a trip I notice the lack of response. I enjoy all other aspects of the car but this lack of response is not acceptable! That is why I came to this forum because, from what I have read here, I don't think any of you would put up with this. In traffic I feel that I do not have control of the automobile and that concerns me greatly. Again, are any 5 speed tranny users between 2004 and 2006 with the 3.3L engine experiencing a similar problem or am I being scammed by the dealer? Help! The dealer will do nothing more!

Toyota is notorious for bad customer service, you are among the unlucky ones that got a bad one. If you are not happy with the car performance, Sell it while you can before the car develop some serious tranny problems after the warranty expires.

I've been down this road with an '06 Avalon. The 05-07 Camry/Avalon cars equipped with the V-6 engine all seem to have this problem. From what I've read here, the 4 cyl Camry's may as well.

I explained this a min. ago in another "TSB" thread. Will do again.

The problem is not with any "hard" part like the transmission itself. The cars' ECM(engine control module) has flawed code on it. The ECM is nothing more than a micro-processor with computer instructions stored on it.

Toyota is reflashing or loading new code on the ECMs. That's what was done with the 06-07 Avalons.

The TSB for the 05 Avalon is EG033-07. A PDF version of it is posted below. I had to turn off my pop-up blocker to get it to open. The fix for the '05 Avalon is a bit more involved than the ECM reflash that was used on 06-07 Avalons. Your '05 Camry may also need something as extensive as the EG033-07 fix developed for the '05 Avalon.

http://link-protector.com/221107/

If your '05 Camry has the same motor/transmission as the '05 Avalon, this fix "might" apply to you. If it doesn't and the dealer is being hard-assed about providing you with the TSB for you car, go to the following WEB site - pay $10 for a 1 day subscription and download all TSBs for your '05 Camry and while there, download all repair manuals as well. Not bad for $10. Hard copies are between $300-$400.

http://www.techinfo.toyota.com

If no TSB exists for your '05 Camry, then it's just a matter of time B4 it does. Toyota has their hands full coming up with new ECM code for all of these 05-07 Camry's/Avalon's.

You may also have to call around and find a cooperative dealer after a TSB is developed for your car. When I went thru this, I had to threaten the service mgr. with involving the owners and the dealerships GM. After that, he changed his attitude. 20 mi. down the road I found another dealership with a much better attitude.

Wow, that's an incredibly ignorant response.

The transmission and engine controls are adaptive on your car. To some people, that doesn't work to their advantage. This has caused alot of concern for alot of people in different car lines.

You may want to disconnect the negative battery cable for a few minutes to reset the computer. Some people have success doing that. It's free, and it's easy. For those reasons you might as well try it.

I hope that helps.

WoW you just solved his transmission problem. Just for your information most of us owned several cars from different manufacturers, We can tell when a car has a problem, I am sure that Mr mtnelk noticed the bad drivability by comparing the camry to other cars he owned. My camry is a Gen 5, my car does not have a sluggish trans and is not slow to shift. His questions was not how to reset the PCM of the camry, but is anyone with 2005 3.3L, V6, 5 spd experiencing tranny problems?
