im looking to replace my factory speakers eventuall in my gen5. im looking for some advice. im looking at component speakers. are these much superior to normal 2 and 3 way speakers? how complicated is the install? im looking specifically at polk component speakers. any advice , recommendations??
Normal 2 way and 3 way speakers can be classified as just coaxial speakers, which has no seperate tweeter for highs. The 2 way deteremines that there is two speakers on the coaxial that seperates highs and lows, 3 ways seperates it into 3 parts, and so on.
Just having that seperate componenet setup with a tweeter would be a pretty big difference. You can probably get some great sound with just an amp and a good set of front components.
Install is fairly easily if you have a decent idea of wiring and automotive understanding.
What is your budget? What type of music do you listen to? How are you going to do the installation?

im looking at around the 500 mark. although if i need to spend more i am ppatient and can save up. so you think just replacing the front and leaving the back factorys and getting an amp would be better than getting front and back components then getting the amp with my next purchase? i might actually do that. im also installing a clarion max675vd head unit soon (its in the mail) and im gonna try and photograph the whole installation process because i cant find any good guides on the net for installing a dvd unit in the dash of a gen 5 camry! if you know of one please tell! also whats the story on 5.1 processors in cars? is it a big difference in music or mainly movies? movies arnt why i bought the unit. i listen to ALL kinds of music. hip hop being my first love, but i DO NOT want a "thumping" system. i want very clear quality sound! i plan on installing it myself however i have no experiance.
i recommend goin wit Totals there a Jl audio product very nice and very clear and have good prices. i could even get u a good deal on a set. and even get a 4channel tma ( Total Mobile Audio) amp

Some companies make what is called a single unit component where the tweeter is on a bridge with a passive crossover rather than the traditional coaxial set up. It's cheaper than seperates and doesn't require mounting the tweeter..but it won't give you the spatial seperation of sound.

btw does anyone know where a guide is for stereo installation for a gen 5?
search the threads i started, i have a thread on my gen 5.5 install of component speakers and run of all new wiring.. just got home from work so i dont feel like searching for you lol
My friend has a gen5 camry and her boyfriend installed 6x9 infinity speakers in the front doors. Kappa series, so they were the NICE ones. I like infinity, I have a 12" sub and amp from them, and the clarity is superb.
I perfer infinity also. Since the front seems to be a component setup anyway (tweeters in the dash and mids in the doors) the sound clarity is very good up front but the rear needs some work IMO. That is why I am going to put a set of top notch infinity 6X9's in the rear and maybe even amp them to get some nice bass. This is an alternative to adding a 8" or 10" sub and should give a little more clarity in the rear as well.
My rear stock speakers are still working just fine. Toyota doesn't mess around when it comes to their sound system to start with, so their stock system in our cars is pretty nice. So clear and everything. I also dynamat'd my whole trunk so i still get the nice deep punch from the infinity, but with the added clarity of the matting.

glad you mentioned that. are there tweeters in the stock radio non jbl? what are those speaker grillish looking things in the far corners of the front dash by the window? is that a place to put my aftermarket tweeters?

Even with the standard system (which is what I have) there are tweeters in thoes locations in the dash. When you step into a diferent car that only has door speakers, say a 2007 Civic, you will really notice the toyota sounds clean and clear as a result of the high mounted tweeters. I noticed this when I was car shopping. They really do a nice job with the sound system on these cars!
