5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Morning Everyone- I was wondering if someone can perform a quick test for me provided they have a 2007 V6 with the new 6-speed Toyota tranmission. I live in NYC where I park on a inclined driveway. Each morning I back out until I reach the street then put the car into 'drive". Lately, as I put the Camry in drive after pulling out to go to work, the Camry literally "slams" into gear. I've had to literally step down hard on the brakes just to insure the Camry doesn't accelerate unexpectedly. Purchased the Camry in early 2007 and have had no problems until now and I'm debating whether or not to bring it into the dealer to have it looked into....my luck, they cannot duplicate the problem.
Thanks much everyone!

I haven't specifically done this in my Camry, but I have experience similar things in nearly every auto tranny I have driven when on an incline in reverse, then going to drive. Especially if you don't stop for several seconds before engaging drive. Try going to neutral for a second or two before going to drive.

My car did that on ocassion when I first got it, since I was used to putting it in drive when im still slowly moving backwards. But it doesnt do that anymore, although you should come to a complete stop before switching from reverse to drive.
i hate this.....even on a flat surface, all the V6 camrys at my dealership "slam" into gear as you stated, unless you have yor foot hsard on the brake.....my 03 I4 camry will go from gear to gear with just a lil brake pressure, and never slam into gear.....i have no idea what causes this, i just know its a pain and makes parking a pain in the ass

Does the idle need adjustment???

no,,,,the cars idle just fine....theyre all brand new 07-08 camrys....i work for toyota
im always moving and parking these, and i just noticed how hars the camry V6 is going into gear if your foot isnt fully depressed on the brake
My wifes 02 gen5 will do this quite violently. It doesn't want to take off forwards, just a sudden jerk forward. I can make it happen by shifting to drive while slowly rolling backwards. And when I mean slow, the car is barely creeping. It doesn't happen when I come to a complete stop though.
Thanks for the replies and tests. FYI, before I put the Camry into drive, I almost always come to a complete stop it then slams into gear. This only happens once each morning and I'm kind of surprised someone else hasn't had a huge accident. Other than this problem I have NOT had any problems with my 2007 Camry since I drove it off the dealers lot in late March. My other concern being the thinness of the paint. I've parked in in the streets of Manhattan once time and after having my rear bumper being "kissed" by other parked cars I've gotten some pretty bad scratches and chipped paint. If someone who has a v6 with 6-speed and lives in a colder climate can also perform this test I'd appreciate it. I suspect in colder climates this "slamming" when you go from reverse into drive will be quite prominent if not dangerous

If it happens every time, take out your video camera and film it happening. Once from the passenger side interior shot and once from the outside. I think you might have a warranty issue.
You might want to inform everyone in your households who occasionally use your Camry this "slamming" into gear will one day make the news when some new unsuspecting Camry owner shifts from reverse into drive and encounters unintended acceleration. Cannot speak for others but I am sure many of us "reverse" out from our driveways then shift into "drive"....the vehicle lurches forward very agressively ( did I mention ..."agressively" ?). I'm surprised this hasn't been reported to NHTSA
