5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a 2005 camry LE Automatic and I am wondering how to take off the shift knob and replace with an aftermarket. Did some research and only found instructions for Gen 6.
Do you just unscrew the two screws on the side and pull it apart?
but! you have an overdrive button, which will have wires going down the shaft as for that I do not know.
make sure your aftermarket knob has the overdrive button
Doesn't matter too much. If you get a shifter without an O/D button, either just drive without O/D, or route the wires to a switch somewhere. I haven't used O/D probably for close to 3 or 4 years, so I just disconnected my wires when I changed my shifter.

Glaring blue HID bulbs are NOT classy, and don't make your car look nice, no matter what that kid in the Civic told you.
Actually, your using O/D all the time. The button is just to turn off O/D, Unless you constantly have the light on the dash saying "O/D off"

do i need to put it in neutral or something or parking is fine
exactly how hard do i have to pull? i think i read somewhere long time ago that you need to brace yourself when you pull..requires alot of strength..is that true?
After you pull down the plastic cover off the shifter rod, you unscrew the two screws and then you pull up on the shifter. You'll have to cut the O/D wires to get it off, and thats it. Then put the new one on, and either tape off the O/D wires so that they don't touch each other (because if the wires touch, it engages and disengages O/D), or splice them together with the new wires of the new shifter if the new one comes with an O/D button.

There's the shifter, and right underneath the shifter, there's a plastic piece that covers the steel rod underneath. You expose the screws by pushing the piece down.
