5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I've used Mobil 1 for many years without a problem. I have 242,000 miles on one engine using Mobil 1 and have not had to perform one single engine repair and the engine looks like new inside. Literally, it looks just like new. You can click on the link in my sig, then pick the Pontiac. The engine pics are on page 5 if I remember correctly.
Also 10W40 and 10W30 are thicker than recommended. I would recommend 5W30 instead.
WOW...indeed...it really looks damn clean inside for a engine that has done 221000 miles! Ok, will stick with Mobil 1 then. Will try to find the 5W30 grade but to be honest, I've not seen this grade in Australia...this is what the Mobil Australia website recommends:

DO NOT USE 5W50!!!!! NEVER!!!!! Your engine clearances are way to tight for that thick of an oil.
10W30 synthetic won't hurt if you're in a warmer area. Mobil 1 seems to run on the thin side of their weight ratings anyways.
You're welcome Aussie guy.
Cool..will stay away from 5W50. Also, the other thing I was thinking of is whether it would be a good idea to run some Nulon Engine Oil Flush prior to filling up with Mobil 1?
Thing is, I just purchased this Camry about 2 weeks ago and I have no idea what oil the previous owner has been running in it. I think it might be Toyota's own oil because it was just serviced in April this year by a the Toyota dealer I bought the car from. This is the Nulon EOF that I was thinking of running through it:

I wouldn't use it. If the engine is heavily sludged and oil flush might soften too much of it too fast and plug the oil pickup. The engine will then starve for oil and ruin the bearings, possibly more.
Mobil 1 is very effective at removing contaminants and keeping them in suspension. It takes longer than using a flush but is much safer in my opinion.
My Dad picked up an Oldmobile last year with over 108,000 miles on it. He started using Mobil 1 right away and has 124,000 miles on it now. I looking inside the oil cap to inspect the rockers and cylinder head and it's very clean. Not as clean as my car, but clean.
I've switched to Mobil 1 synthetic on cars with as low as 6,000 miles (my Camry) and many with well over 100,000 miles and did nothing for preperation. I just switched. I've never had ANY oil related issues.
I've never heard anything bad about Amsoil and from what I understand, it's a great oil. I've just had such great success with every vehicle I've used Mobil 1 in that I can't find any reason to switch.
i wont use anything except mobil 1 fully synthetic 5w30....ran it in my car since ive had it, and i highly reccomend it
make sure you use genuine toyota coolant, ATF fluid and oil filters!

can't get 5W30 Mobil 1 in Australia can only get 10W30 or 0W40 or 5W50....so given the choice, I think I will go with 10W30.
I will still do a search around for 5W30 Mobil 1 but I don't like my chances.
Say, what about Royal Purple 10W30? Just had a read of their website and they have a dyno chart that actually shows an increase of around 4 bhp. Check it out here:
^You know the 5w isn't rated for the higher temps right? Use it in the winter, but during the summer/fall, go 10w.
Wrong. 5W can and should be used year round. Check the owner's manual.

I've heard and read that Royal Purple isn't as good as the claims. I personally don't have any experience with their oil though. I do use Royal Purple Synchromax in my Pontiac's manual transmission Royal Purple gearlube in the rear differential.
