Gen5 intake valve in the intake tube (stock)

car is 2005 camry 3.0L v6

i dismanteled / opened my air fileter box.

i learned that there are 2 pasages of the intake (ram from the hood)

one passage from the top and one on the botom

the botom passage is the long way to the intake box,

The upper passage is the short way to the box. I found out that there is a "VALVE" that opens.
i asked my friend to step on the gas (to rev the car) and the valve did not open.

when does this thing open? when the VVTI activates???

Thanks.

Valve might open based on air or coolant temp. Warmer air coming from the lower passage during engine warm up.

My educated guess is that the lower one is coming from preheated air. When the engine is cold is will draw air from the exhaust manifold area.Once the engine is hot then it will draw air from the ambient flow. This is a generic answer that genrally applies to all gas engines. VVTI is regulated by the engine computer and is the result of temperature, rpm, load/vacuum, speed.
