i just replaced my factory radio and noticed when i turned the car on the airbag light in the instrument cluster is on. im assuming that its because i disconnected the negative battery terminal? or did i screw something up?

I had the passenger come on going over a bump, so if anyone knows how to reset it without taking it to the dealer (they want $118-$200 just to look at it).
yes, yes i did as a matter of fact. i tapped into the steering wheel control wires. this makes sense that thats the issue. did i damage anything by doing that? the dealership wants 80 bucks to "scan" it!!! any solutions besides paying the dealership way too much?

Hmmm. Did you take the steering wheel off for any reason?
On another note, airbag wires are always solid yellow, so be on the lookout whenever you're doing any wiring. About 3 years ago I had a new Celica come in with a deployed driver bag. The kid was installing a ridiculous stereo himself, and was unknowingly tapping into airbag wires with the battery still connected.
They will not cover it under warranty. Most likely you damaged the clock spring. a few hundred bucks will fix it.

how did i damage the clock spring? i dont need to wire my car correctly. its wired right. there was no complicated wiring going on. just tapped into the factory wire harness. no steering wheel taken off or anything like that. ill take trd's advice and take it to the dealership though. i dont want an air bag deploying on me! makes me a little nervous driving around with that light on...

You don't need to be nervous. The airbags will not suddenly deploy. When the light is on the airbags are disabled.
yea i do. it was the three wires that are connected to the steering wheel buttons. its a sepreate plug from the main power plug that connects to the back of the stereo. one red, one blue, and one black.

Alright then, those wires have nothing to do with the airbag system. I guess we weren't clear on what you were doing and assumed you took the steering wheel off. If you take the wheel off and don't line it up just right, you can ruin the coil wire that runs to the airbag unit and the light will come on. But that doesn't seem to be the issue here, so press on.
Since all you did was screw with those wires and take the radio out (I'm assuming), anything you messed with shouldn't have crossed paths with the SRS wiring. Those wires are always solid yellow, and the sensing units and anything else associated with the system has scary stickers and labels all over proclaiming to be part of the airbag system, so retrace your steps and think if you may have inadvertently messed with any of them. Though if all you did was take the radio out, put another in, and tap into the steering wheel switch, I can't imagine what you could have done to cause it.
Did you get the code yet for reference?
And, did you take the bottom cover of the steering wheel column off to get access to the connectors? If I remember right there is an airbag connector there. Double check everything that you unplugged, make sure all the connectors are seated.
