weight and gas milage

i know the heavier the car the more gas it will use. Im just wondering if an extra 100lbs will make a bit difference on my gas milage. My sub box, subs, amp is close to 100lbs and im wondering will it make much of a difference if i ditch it.

It would make a small difference.

You probably won't be able to calculate the difference because it would be so small.

It would make a difference, but it would probably be one or less MPG.

I drove 550 miles yesterday and the first 430 miles my mileage was 31.8 MPG with AC on the entire time, 3 people for 340 miles, and 2 people for the other 90 miles.

I've done the same trip myself with no AC about 6 months prior and achieved 33 MPG.

It should make a difference, because I know 4WD trucks get about 2-3mpg less then their 2WD models, and they tend to weight a few hundred pounds more.

That has alot more to do with adding a transfer case, additional driveshaft, and another differential, than just adding some more weight.

The fuel is spent in stop and go traffic. Going from stopped to any speed takes fuel and if there is more mass to move, then more fuel. Driving on the flat highway, you won't notice any change with an extra hundred pounds. Driving up long mountain highways where the mass begins to fight with gravity, then, yes, it will take more gas. Picture yourself riding a bicycle on flat land versus going up a hill.

+1.

Having the rear of the car hang down due to weight will also cost you in fuel mileage. The bottom of the car and the inside of the rear bumper aren't helpful to airflow.

hmm i do almost 90% city driving stop/go. And at the end of my trips i gotta go up a hill to get to my house.(just about 1km). I was thinking of taking the sub out and the spare tire out for a little bit to see how much that extra weight affects my mpg. But for now since many of you said the effects are 1 or less mpg i might as well keep it.

a bit off topic but i had a total of 6 people in the camry today, with AC on and my sub in there and it was also a 4banger. It was so sluggish and on the highway it took forever to get up to speed! it was at just under 3k rpm going like 125km/h

the extra 100 lbs wont make a huge difference in gas milage....as TRD pointed out it is so minute its almost not worth it to worry about the extra weight
the a/c is honestly the biggest drain on power for us 4cyl guys
