A/C Switches itself on

On my 2007 Camry LE with standard A/C. the A/C switches itself on. The evidence is cool air and a pool of clear water on parking. Does anyone else have this problem. Switching A/C on and off does not fix. Parking and restarting sometimes fixes. Its back to the shop again. Maybe I will get them to fix that grab in the transmission as well. Its a V6 automatic. They may have screwed it up fixing the snap crackle pop. They certainly scratched the radio glass during that last job. What a pain. I wish I'd got the Accord.

I just talked to the mechanic about the A/C . He told me that the air comes on anytime the controls are on defog/defrost. However the green light does not come on. The purpose is to run the compressor occasionally in winter so it doesn't seize up due to not running for a few months. This does not appear to be documented in the car operating manual. So I guess if you want good mileage, in winter, keep the controls off windshield defrost. Sorry for the confusion.

Actually, The A/C compressor runs in defrost to remove the moisture from inside the car that causes fogging on the windows, not to keep the compressor from seizing.

Yep, when using the defrost the A/C compressor is engaged. Running the air across the evaporator will help remove moisture from the air being blown out. It's the same process that puts water on the ground when you run your A/C. When the air goes through the cooler evaporator the moisture in the air condenses on the evaporator's cooler surfaces as the air continues on to be blown onto your windshield and windows.

Now that you know nothing it wrong, you can trade it in on the Accord you want.

In thinking about this foolishness, the last car I owned that did NOT engage the a/c when the defroster was operating was my 77 Rabbit. We need to have a special event for this. We can call it the National Night of Manual Familiarization. This Friday night, everyone needs to sit down in their Stratolounger and read the owners manual. If you can't read, look at the pictures. It would solve half the mysteries of the world for you.

That was a funny but very truthful reply. Perfect!

Actually, it is in the manual. Somewhere in the early 200's under the dash controls section.

Thanks for the comments, even the unhelpful ones. I have the car with manual air controls not the automatic temperature control. Here is what the manual says on page 247. "4. Floor/windshield position - air flows mainly from the floor vents and windshield vents. This position allows the air intake to select fresh automatically. This is to clean up the front view more quickly. If you want to return the setting to recirculate mode, press the air intake selector button once again. Press the A/C button for dehumidified heating or cooling. This setting clears the front view more quickly." So the A/C compressor would not be running unless I select it. "5. Windshield..." Again it says I can turn on the compressor for faster clearing of the front view. These statements suggest the compressor would not be running under these settings unless I select it.

On previous cars I have noticed the compressor start when I select Defrost but not when I select the Floor/Windshield option. In moderate weather I usually drive with the fan on low, and Floor/Windshield selected, and the air flow on fresh. With these settings I do not expect the A/C compressor to be running.

Do you have the temperature setting on "Max Cool"? If you do then that turns on the A/C.
