5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hey I have a 2007 Camry and I think there is something wrong with the speedometer. It seems to be off by 3-5 miles at 30-60MPH and more at higher speeds. I pushed the car to 85-90mph on the freeway and I am traveling at the same speed as everyone else. I called Toyota and asked them about this, and the guy acted like I was lying..."Oh the speedometer is a digital and couldn't be wrong..blah blah blah blah..how do you know it is off...blah blah blah".
Is anyone else experiencing the same problem? I dropped my car off last week and told them about this, and the service advisor looked confused as if this car is problem-proof. This will also be my 4th time going in for the squeeky front brakes!!! And it will probably still squeak when I get my car back.
^He said he was going 85-90 on the highway and neck and neck w/ traffic. In Cali, i think most of the drivers would be afraid to go those speeds for fear of getting a ticket.
OneFly, have you tested w/ a friend, just to see how much it is off by? I'm honestly stumped. Perhaps its a bad unit? Don't believe that electronics never fail BS.
you have no proof ... you cant estimate your speed by the flow of traffic around you, if people did that there would be chaos on the roads all of the time
your speedo is probably fine

You may be right. Like I said, he needs to get a friend and test, but it is pretty rare (at least around here) for traffic to be flowing at 85-90.
I lived in southern California for 34 years, up until 2 years ago. Traffic flowing at 85-90 is perfectly normal. It depends on the freeway, though, since before I moved CHP seemed to be cracking down on speeders a bit more, especially on the I-210 and I-15. It took some SERIOUS adjustment for my wife and I here in NC. She got her 1st ticket 1 month after moving here, and I got mine 2 months after moving here. It was hard to get the fast and aggressive CA driving out of our systems.
I will confirm that my 07 Camry XLE stock (except borla exhaust) is over by 3 mph. If the speedometer reads 60 your are really doing 57. I have checked this with a gps and a radar gun.

Borrow a GPS from a friend or neighbor and go for a ride. It isn't unusual for a speedometer to be off a little (usually a percentage which is why you're sensing a larger variation at higher speeds).
DOT allows a 10% error so if yours is less than that you're not likely to get any satisfaction from a dealer.
If the error 'really' is bothersome you might want to check out an electronic speedometer correction device. It's basically a tiny computer that's connected between the speed sensor and speedometer head unit. You set DIP switches to account for whatever % error you have. The result is a speedometer reading that's dead on at all speeds.

Agree, and that means at 85 you are probably more like 81.....same in my camry and GS

Most interstate highways and many other US highways have mile markers set every mile. If I recall California had some additional mile markers as well on non-interstate. Drive down the highway at exactly 60 on the speedometer and click it off with a stop watch or get your wife to hold a watch with a second hand and mark the point you pass the first marker and then the second. It should be exactly 1 minute between mile markers. At 60, if it takes 57 seconds, then you are actually doing 63 and if it takes 63 seconds you are actually doing 57. You can calculate this for any speed, just do the math. 60 seconds in a minute divided by the number of seconds it takes to traverse the mile, multiplied again by 60 equals true speed. 52 seconds =69 mph 60 / 52 = 1.15 x 60 = 69.23 mph
