Drive-By-Wire: Delay with 5 speed manual?

I am getting a 2002 2.4L 5 speed manual tranny Camry...

Question, does the infamous "delay" with drive by wire exist with 5 speed manual transmissions?

If so, can the ECM be recalibrated to solve it?

Or does the delay have nothing to do with DBW per se and is a consequence of the automatic transmission?

I've never heard of anyone complaining about delay with a manual transmission.

You really need to stop being so paranoid and worrying all the time.

Life's too short. If you liked the car when you drove it and the price is reasonable, buy it.

You won't regret it.

The Camry is a very dependable car. Relax.

I have an 07 manual and I'm not sure what that issue is. The car seems fine to me. The only thing that annoys me is that the RPMs go up when I press the clutch despite being off the gas.

Thanks for response.

I test drove that 02 with 80K miles on it. I immediatelly stalled it, apparently it needs more throttle to get moving than my Gen-IV 5 speed manual. I did adjust to it after stalling it about twice.

Ditto that (for my 07 CE I4 M/T). The tach raises about 300 RPM's. I noticed that it happens on a friends 2004 Camry M/T. I'll have to ask my friend with a M/T Focus. I'm not worrying about it, maybe I'll ask when I bring it for the first oil change.

The only issue I do have with the trans, when it's cold, it's a bit jerky around the 2000/2500 mark. Seems to go away after a few minutes.

This happens because the car is anticipating you shifting to the next gear and raises the RPM's to help keep them up to lessen the accelleration time.

Actually, this happens to match the gearbox gear speeds closer when downshifting. It's a factory way of getting the different gears closer to the same speed. Road Racers do it manually when they don't use the clutch so that it goes into gear smoothly and doesn't shock the drivetrain.

I don't see what's all the big fuss about these days about DBW. It's not like you're going to be tuning your cars.

I agree.

There's nothing wrong with drive by wire.

We have reached a point of no return in using computer technology in uncountable number of devices in everyday life. I believe the auto industry will continue to increase the use of computers in various functions of vehicles. For example,we have the ABS which uses computer control to help drivers avoid skidding.

Drive by wire is cool especially if you can hack into it and have the coolest remote control car!

A computer rolls down the windows now, adjusts vent/heat controls, runs engine, senses tire pressure, senses suspension.....

Could it be DBW is the reason 2.4L Camry (supposedly) gets the same MPG as the older 2.2L?

Yer, the HVAC system, manual control, is electronically controlled now. The air flow control or temp control used to have a cable attached to the back of it, but now it's electronic.

I actually preferred the controls in my Gen 4 to the controls in Gen 5 and 6. Reason is that on Gen 5 & 6, the knobs you grab and turn the outside so without looking at the knob, you can't tell where it's pointed. On Gen 4, however, you grab the knob on the inside on a bar and you could feel where it was pointed without looking at it. The knobs on the Gen 5 & 6 do have tactile feedback for each increment, but without turning the knob all the way high or low, you can't really tell where it's pointed without looking.
