Gen5 Help Removing Auxilary Box 2005 Camry?

Hello:

I've searched this forum, and I cannot find an answer to this question.

I have a 2005 Camry with a type 1 CD player (the most basic system, no cassette, no NAV system). I've successfully installed an iSimple iPod adaptor with the help of the many excellent posts in this forum. Everything works great.

But now I want drill a hole in the auxiliary box (the compartment BELOW the CD player, with the door that is hinged from the top, and swings out to open) for the iPod cable, so I can store my iPod out of sight in the auxiliary box.

I want to remove the auxiliary box before I drill the hole, but I cannot figure out how to remove it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
Terry42

check the camry manuals stickied in "camry general discussion". those are full repair manuals, you should be able to find the info you want there.

Can you use the steering wheel control to advance to the next song? Does it display artist and song?

For future reference, i bought the iSImple ISAS71 PXDP (not the PXDP-2) from Peripheral. Everything I needed was in the box. I used the PXHTY3 harness, and I didn't have to cut the green wire, although the instructions say that you do. In addition to setting the dip switches 1,2,4,8, I also had to set dip switch 6 because if I didn't, the volume was slightly muted.

Yes, the steering wheel controls work. I can advance to the next song, and change the volume using the steering wheel controls. I can also use controls on the radio itself to fast forward or fast reverse through a song. And I can also use the iPod itself to control everything (except volume). To get the radio in "iPod mode", you have to press the "Disc" button on the CD player twice. When in "iPod" mode, the radio flashes between a "1" and a "2" which is odd.

My radio does NOT display the artist and the song. On the 2005 Camry, I believe that you need the type III radio with the navigation system to be able to display the artist and the song title. I have the most basic radio which is not capable of displaying text (except for hard coded things like numbers for the the radio station).

So far, it seems like a good buy. I got the iSimple at BestBuy for $100. The auto stores wanted anywhere from $150 to $200 for the exact same thing, not including installation. The installation was pretty easy. The most difficult part about the whole thing was getting the radio out of the dash, but somebody on this forum posted detailed pictures showing how to remove your radio, so even removing the radio was pretty easy.

Thanks. I found the manual (manual 71 page 21) and it shows where the clips are located on the auxiliary box (or "Console Panel Sub Assembyl" as they call it in the manual). It says to use a "moulding remover". I tried a screw driver wrapped with tape, but I'm afraid that I'm going to crack the console panel.

I did an internet search, and found the tool, but they want $25 for it.

Anbody have any suggestions (besides buy the tool, or pay somebody else to do it)?

Thanks

you're talking about the compartment below the radio correct? just use a taped up screwdriver... no need to buy a special tool. i've actually been able to use my bare hands to pull some trim pieces out, so don't be afraid to use some force. and just so you know, you need to either remove or move out of the way the trim surrounding the gearshift, or you won't be able to lift the compartment completely.

Thanks for the replies MrSo0h0o and LE05. The screwdriver with tape worked great. I removed the "Consol Panel Assembly", drilled a hole for the iPod cord, and put everything back together with no problems.

Thanks for the help.
