It's the 12v magnetic clutch relay in the fuse box. It's faulty in the 02s. Go to a junk yard and pick up another relay (any 12v will do), replace(the diagram to fuse locations is on the fuse box lid), and problem fixed. Should cost less than $5 to do it yourself this way; go to a dealer, and the relay is going to cost you $50+. Good luck.
It seems like it may be the relay and that's what I was getting at.
If that's the case it would be extremely stupid to get one from a junkyard.
lol. Not really. I'm not suggesting picking one up off of the ground, but these are just simple relay fuses; as long as the prongs line up and it's 12v, it will work fine with no problems. There are plenty of rear end damaged toyotas/lexus' out there that you can pull one from.
When this happened to my mother's 02, I went to a salvage yard, pulled a 12v from under the hood of an Lexus ES and swapped it out with the one in the Camry. Problem solved.
Hi: Just went to the A/C shop 3 weeks ago for what appered was the same symptoms. The shop replaced an A/C relay, If I am not mistaken it was the clutch relay, they stated that the original part was $ 79.00 at the Dealer. They charged me $39.00 for the part and $100.00 for the diagnosing and installation. The A/C works like like a charm. Let me look for the bill so I can be more specific. This guys here are great but it was around 100 degrees in Atlanta and I could not wait.
Good Luck. Jose
If I recall, the same symtoms appear if the refrigerant level is too low, so popping some gauges on the a/c system and checking pressure would give you a pretty instant check to see if you could eliminate this as a potential cause.

That is correct.
Even if it's just the relay it would be a good idea to make sure that the R-134A isn't low and the pressures are within specs.

slick you're slick alright - i have an 02 no problems with it yet A/C - something i gotta remmember if it does. This site is better than a factory manual sometimes
