playing WMA files

Has anyone had any success playing WMA files in their CD player? I have no problems playing burned mp3 files on a CD-RW but it doesn't recognize WMA even though the manual says it does.

I can play WMA just fine in my CD player. But I played with CD-R. I'm not sure the unit can read CD-RW or not. Try to play WMA on a CD-R to see what happen.

My NAV/JBL has never shown text on a CD whether it is a home burnt or store bought version.

Hmm, my new 5.1 (obtained via NAV TSB) acts like 6.1 (no override capability) and I didn't realize that 7.1 was out. I'm screwed

I had the same problem, and it turned out to be the version the wma files are encoded with since the unit only plays wma's that were encoded with a certain update or some crap. I decided to just rip the songs and convert them to mp3 or don't download wma at all.

I think the issue is that the unit cannot play protected-WMAs. I have also used CD-RWs in my NAV and it works fine.

When I put it in CDs I actually do see the text from the CD (i.e. Artist, album, song title)

You are correct. Unprotected WMA's work just fine (when you buy CD and then rip to WMA). However, if you download a WMA from an online site, such as Zune Marketplace, they are protected and will not play. Yet another example of big corporations sticking it to the consumer to save a couple pennies...

Then why can I not see text from a CD (store bought)?

I don't think all CD's have the CD-Text capability. I'm guessing most record labels don't bother b/c so few CD players support it. I have yet to come across any CD's that say they have CD-Text included.

I just assumed that if it was one that had text and other features that work on the drive in my laptop, they would at least show song titles on my NAV system. So dissapointing.

I guess I need to just make Mp3 cd-r's and be done with it.
