5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Well, I"ve had several people ask me to let them know the status of transmission flares on the '08 models.
I've had my car for 2.5 weeks now, and in that time, I've put almost 4,000 miles. Yes, I drive a LOT.
In that time, it's had city driving, highway driving, and spent over 2 hours traveling 12 miles on Monday. That's the curse that befalls you when you try to leave Gatlinburg, Tennessee on the last day of a holiday weekend. Oh well, it was a fun weekend, anyway.
Of the miles driven, I've experienced absolutely zero transmission flares, hiccups, slips, or whatever kind of problem the flare has been described as. It's been perfect, with one exception: After driving a couple of hours on 75 north, I stopped for lunch at Cracker Barrel. At the end of the on ramp, it acted like it didn't want to shift, but that would have been a 1-2 shift. Either way, it went up to about 4K before shifting. No problems since then, and even that wasn't a harsh shift or anything that concerned me.
With that being said, it looks like the problem may be fixed?

I have an 08 V6 XLE. It's the wife's car and only has 350 miles on it. I have not noticed any transmission problems the limited time I've been allowed to drive it.
Only problems I have noticed. Dealer had all the tires pumped up to 40 psi. I learned how to reset the TPMS. One of the cup holders in the rear seat fold down has the felt in the bottom iof the cup installed off center.

Okay, you got me. I've got to ask. At what point does a person decide to check the rear cupholder lining to see if it's installed correctly?

You guys on this forum are always finding something wrong, so I did a search to find something wrong with my new car so I would fit in. The cupholder is all I could find wrong. I'm pretty picky but that's all I could find. I'm impressed with the quality.
I have two other things to be concerned with. My wife lets the seatbelt go after she unbuckles. It has made some marks on the pillar when it retracts. She has been appropiately reprimanded. The plastic on the lower part of the driver's door is easily scuffed by my big feet when I get in and out of the car. It cleans off so far but it will probably start looking bad in the future.
I also noticed a hint of a whine from the transmission in first and second under medium acceleration but that's probably because the car is so quiet.

Gen 5-5.5 Camry's and Highlanders have the same problem when you let the seatbelts go. I noticed the same damage on my Mom's Highlander. I used to let my seatbelt go because in my previous cars nothing got damaged. I now guide the seatbelt back no matter what I'm driving.

Does the whine sound somthing like "iiiiisshoooullllllldddhhhhhaaaavvveeebbboouuggghh tttaaaaahhhooonnndddaaa??"
I have the same problem with the sills, especially when there isn't much clearance to open the door wide. Check out the door sills that the Canadian SE's get. There is a thread in the first couple of pages with part numbers.
