so i ran some numbers.

driving from work my low fuel idiot light came on.

i stoped @ the nearest gas station to fill up.

it took 15.53 gallons before the pump stoped.

when i came home, i read the car manual and it indicates 18 gallon tank.

that means that when the light comes on, there are still 2.5 gallons of fuel left in the tank.

for me that would be around 75 miles.

would you want to drive 75 miles with the "tank empty light on"?

That's pretty much the way it is on just about any car.

An empty gas tank is a bomb. The idea is to get it refilled B4 the tank has nothing but vapors in it.

Car mfgs. have been reading lower than it "really" is is for many years to help prevent explosions that come from tanks with nothing but vapor fumes in them. Rear end collisons against a truly empty tank are more likley to result in explosions than a tank with fuel.

Yes....fire can result, but there's a big difference between a fire and a gas tank explosion.
