I've replaced stock premium sound systems before on a couple of my Fords and i've had to run wiring to all the speakers to by pass the amp.
But I can't find any info on this. I know this will bypass the factory AMP, but am I going to have to run all new wiring to the speakers?
Also, anyone with experience, will the factory sub stay functional when bypassing the amp? And i've been pretty impressed, this is the best stock system i've ever had, will changing the head unit and bypassing the amp make it sound worse? I know changing head units usually makes stock systems alot better and that's what i've always done but I can't find any specs on the JBL system.
depends on what you want to do with your system.. generally, by replacing the stock head unit and the speakers and adding a sub and amps will yield better sound quality. if you are going to do so, you will have to run all new wiring. if you bypass the amp, that is basically saying you dont want anything to do with the stock system, including the sub(which im assuming u have that is under the pass. seat).

So, since I am replacing the head unit, that means, I want nothing to do with the stock system and I have to run all new wiring to the speakers? Is that correct?

well you could replace the HU and use the stock amp, but i believe thats pretty complicated.. if you want better sound quality, i would bypass the amp and run all new wiring(necessary if you are bypassing the amp)

Then what is the purpose of the adapter that hooks into to stock harness?
It's $150 for the iPod/aux adapter or it's $200 for a head unit, ipod cable, Pro-Fit mount, Mount kit and wire harnes.
oh ok.. well the purpose of that is so u dont cut your factory wiring.. you hook that up to the harnesses coming from your stock HU and then connect the wires from your aftermarket HU to those from the harness.. seeing that you have the JBL system, its more complicated to bypass the amp but i seem to be the only one who did it on this forum.. to bypass, you will use the same wire harness but u will find the alternate wire harness from the car in the bottom left section of the dash after u pull out your stock HU.. u cant miss it because they are the same two connections as the harness.. i will be installing a new double din unit this week so i will take pics of what i did for all
ok lilboi, hopefully i cant make it clearer... firstly, if you are going to bypass the amp, you will have to also install an aftermarket amp and speakers. If you plan to do this, then you should bypass the factory amp.
To do so:
-first remove the radio. Use a taped up screwdriver to pry out the HVAC controls. stick the screwdriver in on both the left and right sides and it should come out easily.
-Then take off the trim around the radio. this is one of the more difficult parts. it is held on by 4 clips, 2 on the bottom and 2 on the top. the way they are designed, you really have to pull hard. it will feel like its about to break. easiest way to do this is to pull down on the trim where the bottom tabs are(you will see the tabs). once those 2 unlock, start pulling on the top of the trim, where the trim meets the dash. pull outwards.. hard. like i said, it will feel like its about to break. hopefully it doesnt lol
- after the trim is removed, it will reveal the 4 bolts holding in the radio. i believe they are 10mm. unscrew them and then the radio comes out. dont forget to unplug the harnesses from the radio.
- once the radio is removed, you will see a nice big hole. if you look inside the hole, at the bottom left of the inside, you will see 2 harnesses joined at a connector. the left side goes to the factory amp. the right side powers all the factory components. remove the harnesses on the left hand side. you will notice these plugs match the toyota harnesses you purchased. plug in the harnesses you purchased into these 2 plugs. from that, you should be able to wire up your aftermarket HU according to their wiring diagram. generally, you will only need to wire 3 wires. 12v constant, 12v switched and ground. but always follow the wiring diagram provided. once you do this, all u have to do is run your wires for speakers and amp(s) and you will be good to go.
Remember, only perform this factory amp bypass if you are going to run new speaker wire for new speakers AND are installing an aftermarket amp. if you do not, your stock speakers WILL NOT function.
If you want to keep your JBL system you don't need to buy new amps and speakers.
Metra and Schoche both make digital JBL bypass modules for Toyota's equipped with the JBL system. All your aftermarket headunit requires are front and rear outputs. That's it. No mess.
